Box Score
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Although they brought a runner home on a base hit to tie the game, the Davenport baseball team was limited to four hits and Union College used eight to score six runs and beat the Panthers 6-1 to take the non-conference series Saturday. The Panthers will try to avoid a sweep Sunday at 1 p.m.
Despite being in an offensive slump in the very young season, the Panthers (0-2) did see
Michael Allen try to get them out of it, going a perfect 2-for-2 with a pair of free passes.
Carlos Berroa also tried to ignite the spark by driving in the Panthers first run of the season with a base hit, while
Cam Cooper recorded the fourth on the afternoon.
Michael Clutterbuck (0-1) had five innings of work in his Panther debut, allowing one earned run on five hits and seven walks while striking out two batters.
The Bulldogs (3-0) quickly on the board in their opening frame with a two-out solo shot to left field. Looking to get an early comeback, Allen and Edward Grochowalski, Jr. got the second inning started with back-to-back walks and
Derek Dennis laid down a bunt to move them both into scoring position, but Bulldog starter Drew Hillard escaped the threat with a strikeout and a ground out.
Allen continued to lead the Panthers when he led off the fourth inning with a double, but Hillard wouldn't allow him to reach home plate as he retired the next three Panthers.
The Panthers finally broke down Hillard in the fifth inning.
Andrew Kawam was hit by the pitch with one out and
Connor Seymour took over for him at first. The Panthers caught a break when a fielding error by the shortstop allowed Kawam to reach third and Berroa disciplined the Bulldogs with a RBI double, ending Hillard's day with a no-decision.
Vance Sullivan (1-0) got the Bulldogs out of the inning allowing the one run by closing it out with a fly out to left. Union got its lead back in its half of the fifth when a one-out walk and a fielding error set up the Bulldogs to break the tie with a RBI single. The Bulldogs cashed in an unearned insurance run in the seventh, but it wasn't needed as they added three more runs in the eighth inning.
