ACHA D3 National Tournament Preview: SUNY-Maritime

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Head coach Chris Green and his D3 hockey team heads to Springfield, Mo. this week for the ACHA National Tournament. The Panthers, which finished as the runner-up in last year's tournament, are the No. 1 seed from the North Region and will have three pool play games from Tuesday through Thursday with the hopes of making it to the semifinals Friday and finals Saturday. DU opens pool play on Tuesday against SUNY-Maritime who is the fourth seed out of the Atlantic Region.

THE GAMES: Davenport will play three games in three days beginning on Tuesday in Pool C. DU will face SUNY-Maritime on Tuesday, Marquette on Wednesday and Kennesaw State on Thursday. The winner of the pool will be the only team to advance to the national semifinals on Friday against the winner of Pool D.

PANTHERS VERSUS PRIVATEERS: This is the first meeting in school history

POOL C MATCHUPS: Davenport is in Pool C as the No. 1 seed from the North Region. Joining them is SUNY Maritime (No. 4 – Atlantic), Marquette (No. 3 – Pacific) and Kennesaw State (No. 2 – South). The Panthers have faced Marquette so far in the regular season as they defeated the Golden Eagles 8-0 and 3-2 (SO) in the first two games of the 2012-13 season. This will be there first ever matchups with SUNY and Kennesaw.

SCOUTING SUNY-Maritime:  The Privateers compete in the Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) and advanced to the national tournament by posting two upsets in their regional tournament as they entered it ranked No. 7. SUNY is 26-2 on the season with their only losses to Farmingdale State and a juniors team. SUNY posted upsets of Penn State (Brandywine) and Alvernia to make it out of their region. Vincent Monfredo leads the Privateers in scoring with 61 points and is tops on the team with 30 goals as well as 31 assists. He is followed by William Kelly (48), Daniel Tyx (38) and Tanner McWain (37). Harris Burger leads the team between the pipes as he posted a 15-2 regular season record with a 2.46 GAA and a save percentage of .91.

A LOOK at DAVENPORT - Davenport claimed their first ever MCHC West Division Title by going 13-1 in league play including their first ever sweep of rival Hope College...DU has played six of the 20 teams appearing at the National Tournament and went 6-4 in those matchups...Jordan Steger and Donald Sund lead the team in points (44) and goals (22) while Branden Burton is tops in assists with 24...John Cruse finished with a GAA of 1.94
