CLERMONT, Fla. – Davenport picked up another win by the mercy rule but then fell victim to a hot Bellevue (Neb.) squad as they split on their final day in the sunshine state. DU defeated Ave Maria 12-4 in six innings before falling to the Bruins 12-1 in five as they conclude their spring break trip with an overall record of 10-5-1. The Lady Panthers went 9-3 in their fifth straight year appearing at the NTC Spring Games and will be in action next on March 15 when they play at Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.).
Game One – W, 12-4 over Ave Maria (Fla.)
The offense continued its outstanding play scoring 10+ runs for the fifth time in their last seven games to pick up a win over the Gyrenes in the first ever meeting between the two schools. Three different players finished with three hits as
KC Dunne was 3-4 with three RBI while
Debra Burton and
Amber Getty matched her in the hits column.
The Lady Panthers scored in five of their six at bats scoring one in each of the first two innings, two in the third, five in the fourth and three in the sixth. The fourth was where DU did most of their damage collecting the five runs on six hits.
Debra Burton led off the inning with a triple and then was brought home on a single by
Carli SanMillan and she was followed by hits from
Melissa Covert and Getty. DU put the game away when
Paige Sant'Angelo picked up a 2-RBI double and Burton also got an RBI in the sixth.
Game Two – L, 12-1 Bellevue (Neb.)
Davenport's seven game winning streak came to an abrupt halt at the hands of a perennial NAIA National Tournament as Bellevue dealt them a 12-1 loss in five innings. The game was the last appearance for DU in Florida as
Sam Cole suffered her third loss of the season on the mound after getting the win in the day's first game.
The Bruins scored in every inning while DU could only plate a run in the fourth on a solo homerun from
Amber Getty. Both DU pitchers (Cole and
Kyleigh Linebaugh) struggled allowing the most runs in a single game this season but only five of them were earned as the defense had an off-game as well.
Davenport finishes the trip to Florida at 10-5-1 overall and they will head to Tennessee for a four-game stretch against Freed-Hardeman and Martin Methodist next weekend. The team will play its home opener (and opening game at the new Farmers Athletic Complex) in their appearance following the trip to Tennessee when they host Bethel College (Ind.) on March 20
