GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Michael Allen and
Jotham Woo both had three hits on the day and
Drew Sain allowed one run in 8.1 innings of solid work as the Davenport baseball team split a doubleheader with Northwestern Ohio Friday afternoon. The Panthers held on to win game one 2-1 and the Racers took advantage of four costly errors to win the evening cap 6-0.
Allen had a pair of doubles on the afternoon, one of which was just short of a home run, while Woo stretched one of his hits into a triple. Both also drove in each run on the day.
Game 1
It didn't take Davenport (13-8, 2-2 Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference) very long to get on the board. In the first inning,
Eric Cummings drew a one-out walk and scored all the way from first when Woo saw his hitting streak extend to 11 when he found an open gap in right center for an RBI three-bagger.
The eventual winning run came in the third inning. Cummings was awarded first base after being hit by the pitch, and after a fly out, Allen sent a pitch to the left field fence, just missing the ballpark's first home run. Although Cummings easily scored the second run, Allen tried to go for a triple but was tagged out on the play.
Sain (1-0), who allowed seven hits and a walk, took a shutout gem into the ninth but couldn't quite complete the game. He would retire the leadoff hitter but a double, followed by a RBI single up the middle, cut the lead to one.
Ryan Butzer took over and got into a bigger jam by loading the bases, but a grounder to the shortstop
Carlos Berroa set up a game-ending double play.
Game 2
Like the Panthers did in the first game, the Racers (9-11, 3-3 WHAC) immediately went to work on pitcher
Bobby Walter. UNOH opened the game with a single but Allen caught the leadoff runner trying to steal. A fielding error proved to be costly as the Racers used a two-out RBI single to score the first run.
UNOH ran away with the lead in the third inning. Walter surrendered back-to-back leadoff single before a throwing error on an attempted sacrifice bunt bounced into a spacious foul territory, allowing both runs to score and moving the batter-runner to third. The Racers would take a 4-0 lead on a sacrifice fly.
Walter went four innings allowing one earned run and seven hits.
Zach Liebman took over and threw two shutout innings of ball before handing the ball to
Corey Anderson, who only surrendered one run on a leadoff triple and another defensive mistake.
Both team return to the Farmers Athletic Complex Saturday for another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
Post-Game Quotes – Pitching Coach
Eric Lawrence
On Drew Sain's Performance – “Drew threw really well for us. It was good to see him come in there to throw strikes and do exactly what he needed to do: eliminate base runners. He did a good job with that.”
On Bobby Walter: “He may have gotten a little rattled there, but he too threw strikes and that is all what we can ask for guys: eliminate base runners and make quality pitches. He gave up a couple of big hits and an error, but he'll learn from those mistakes.
