Panthers Head into WHAC Play after Split at Shawnee State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The Lady Panther softball team concluded their last extended road trip of the regular season with a series split at Shawnee State University. Davenport recovered after blowing a seventh inning lead in game one to win 6-4 in extra's before falling 6-3 in the nightcap. DU finishes the weekend 3-1 and now sits at 17-8-1 entering conference play this week as they head to Aquinas on Wednesday before hosting Siena Heights on Saturday and then a road trip to Lourdes on Sunday.

Game 1 – W, 6-4 (8)

Davenport got the day started off with some late heroics as they fought off a rally from the host Bears to pull out an extra inning win. DU controlled most of the game as they took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first when Ashleigh Blovsky, Paige Sant'Angelo and Carli SanMillan all picked up an RBI.

Sam Cole was brilliant through the first four innings as the senior sat down all 12 batters she faced until the Bears got their first base runner in the fifth and brought across a pair of runs to cut the lead to just one at 3-2. Davenport added what looked to be an insurance run in the sixth when Melissa Covert singled home SanMillan but SSU had one last rally in them as they tied the game at 4-4 with a 2-out two-RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

Facing some adversity, the DU squad responded in a big way and posted two runs in the top of the eighth which included an RBI single from freshman Katie Creighton. Cole then got three of the four batters she faced in the third to hand DU the 6-4 win. The victory lifted Cole to 12-4 on the season.

Game 2 – L, 3-6

Looking to post a sweep and head into WHAC play on a 4-game winning streak, DU fell behind early as Shawnee State scored one in the first and two in the second to lead 3-0 on starter Kyleigh Linebaugh. The Panthers got a big boost in the third when junior Amber Getty continued to swing the hot bat as she connected on a two-run homerun to cut the margin to just one.

Unfortunately, the host Bears added three more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 6-2 lead and although DU did manage to get one back in the top of the seventh, SSU was able to get out of a bases loaded jam that followed to pick up the 6-3 win.

The freshman Linebaugh falls to 4-4 on the season

Davenport will be in action next when they face cross-town rival Aquinas at Fuller Park at 4 p.m.
