GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport opens conference play this week when they welcome in Aquinas College on Wednesday before taking on Siena Heights and newcomer Lourdes over the weekend. DU will enter the league slate with an overall record of 17-8-1 and is looking at claiming its third consecutive Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship. All league contests will be doubleheaders as DU looks to improve on their 3-1 WHAC opener record and 3-1 WHAC home opener mark.
Successful Start to the Farmers Athletic Complex - Davenport christened their new ballpark with an impressive 9-6 win over NCAA DII and GLIAC foe Northwood University on Wednesday. The Panthers jumped out front 9-1 before holding on to the win as the Timberwolves made a valiant comeback but Sam Cole shut the door to get the park started with a win. DU then fell 17-9 in eight innings in the nightcap.
Defense of WHAC Title Begins - Davenport, winners of the last two regular season Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championships, will start defense of that this week when they host Aquinas on Wednesday and then follow with a home series against Siensa Heights on Saturday and away series at Lourdes on Sunday.
Rivalry with Aquinas - Davenport and Aquinas have developed quite the rivalry over the years since head coach Ronda Varnesdeel came over to start the DU program after playing and coaching at Aquinas. Varnesdeel, who guided the Saints to four WHAC titles, now has two already at Davenport and is 9-6 against her former school. DU has won nine of the past 13 meetings against the Saints but AQ sent DU home last year at the WHAC Tournament.
A Quick Look at Aquinas - Aquinas, under the direction of sixth year head coach Crystal Laska, are 12-9 on the season after going 4-2 last week at Spring Arbor and in the Olivet Nazarene tournament. The Saints are led in batting by Lindsey Stewart (.371) and Sadie Stowell (.364). On the mound, Carlie Giarmo has posted a 5-1 record despite a 3.36 ERA.
A Quick Look at Siena Heights - Head coach Laura Klusarits enters her sixth season at the helm of the Saints program and they are off to an 11-9 overall after going 4-2 last week in games against Adrian, Indiana Wesleyan and Huntington. Taylor Hayes leads the Saints with a .526 batting average as five total players are over the .300 mark. On the mound, SHU is led by Katie O'Hotzke with a 6-5 overall record with a 5/31 ERA.
A Quick Look at Lourdes- Head coach Jo Ann Gordon leads the Gray Wolves in their inaugural year of softball. Lourdes so far is 2-10 with all of their action coming on their spring break trip to Clermont and the NTC Spring Games. LU, which has not played since March 9, is led in hitting by Bre Megyesi who has an average of .417. On the mound, Casey Cherry leads the Gray Wolves with an ERA of 3.18 and is tied for the team lead in wins at 1-4.
