Panthers Sweep Another Doubleheader to Extend Win Streak to Eight

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team had to wait a little over an hour for the weather to clear up but it put it managed to pick another doubleheader sweep over Saint Xavier at Farmers Athletic Complex Sunday. The Panthers held on to win game one 8-4 before pouncing the Cougars 10-0 in the evening cap. The Panthers will have little rest as they travel Madonna to makeup a Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader Monday at 2 p.m.
 
The Panthers have now swept four straight doubleheaders to extend win streak to eight.
 
Tyler Berger had three hits, including a triple, to lead the Panthers (23-10) in game one. Jotham Woo tallied a pair of hits and runs scored each.
 
Ryan Manning stretched one of his two base hits into a triple in game two. Edward Grochowalski Jr. had four RBI including a two-run blast in the evening cap of the doubleheader.
 
Game One
Davenport got the first run in the second inning. Eric Cummings led off with a single through the right side and after a groundout he scored when on Berger's single through the right side.
 
After Saint Xavier (16-14) tied the game one run apiece in the third, Davenport regained the lead in its half of the frame. Woo hit a one-out single to right center, stole second and reached third on a Michael Allen's base hit. As Andrew Kawam was stealing second, the throw sailed wide to pass the middle infielders, allowing Woo to make his way home. Grochowalski followed with a RBI single to second to take a 3-1 lead.
 
Berger hit into a wide open gap in left center for a triple to lead off the fourth. Carlos Berroa was hit by the pitch and as he was stealing second, the throw went once again wide and it allowed Berger to score the Panthers fourth run. The Panthers added two more runs in the inning on RBI singles by 3-4 hitting combo Woo and Allen.
 
Zach Liebman (3-0) allowed two runs in five innings of work. He also scattered five hits and a pair of walks but punched out a season-high 10 batters, including five straight. Ryan Butzer took over and allowed two runs on three hits in the sixth and Colton Satterlee closed out the game surrendering only one walk.
 
Game Two
The Panthers got all the runs they needed in the opening frame. Cam Cooper and Dennis both drew leadoff walks and moved into scoring position on a passed ball. Allen brought Cooper home with an RBI groundout and with the wind against him, Grochowalski sent a pitch over the left field fence for a two-run blast, giving the Panthers a 3-0 lead.
 
In the third inning, Dennis drew another walk and back-to-back singles from Woo and Allen brought the shortstop home. The Panthers took a 6-0 lead when Manning hit a two-run single to left field.
 
Bobby Walter (4-1) threw five solid innings of work, surrendering only three hits and a walk while striking out three. Garrett Lovik and Corey Anderson each threw an inning. Both relievers punched out a pair while Anderson conceded one hit in the seventh.
