GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After playing just one series last week thanks to some rainy and cool weather throughout the state of Michigan, Davenport will play eight games over the next six days highlighted by a pair of home doubleheaders on Tuesday against Cornerstone and Thursday against Hope College. The Panthers are currently 24-9-1 on the season and tied for the conference lead at 7-1. DU will also play two more league series over the weekend when they travel to Madonna on Saturday and host Indiana Tech on Sunday for senior day.
A Quick Look at Cornerstone - The Golden Eagles have the best overall winning percentage in the league at .875 entering the week. Head coach Jim Farrell and his squad are just one game back of the leading Panthers and will begin play on Wednesday at Davenport with the reigning WHAC Player and Pitcher of the Week in Heidi Warmelink. The standout is currently leading the conference in ERA at 0.76 and is leading her team with a .455 batting average.
A Quick Look at Hope College - The Flying Dutch are 12-10 in their third year under head coach Mary Vande Hoef. Hope, located in Holland, Mich. is a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and is 4-0 in league action with a DH scheduled on Tuesday against Trine before their meeting with DU on Thursday. Leading the Dutch at the plate is Laura Tjepkema who is batting .386 on the season and she is closely followed by Jenna Maury (.339) and Peyton Wells (.339) who is tied for the team lead with Tjepkema with 20 RBI. On the mound, Natalie Hiser leads the team with seven wins and is second in ERA at 3.56.
A Slugfest or Pitching Duel? - The matchup between Davenport and Cornerstone on Tuesday will feature two of the most productive offenses in the league as well as two of the best pitchers. DU and CU have four of the top six hitters in the conference in terms of average (Getty and Dunne for the Panthers, Warmelink and Oberst for the Golden Eagles). The two Grand Rapids area schools also have solid pitching as Warmelink leads the WHAC with a 0.76 ERA while
Sam Cole is third with a 1.68 ERA. Cole leads the WHAC with 15 wins while Warmelink has 12.
Team Rankings in NAIA - Davenport, which has 24 wins so far in 2013, is ranked in the top-10 nationally in two different categories. The Panthers are fourth in Total Triples (16) and sixth in Triples per Game (0.471). They rank in the Top-50 nationally in ten different categories highlighted by RBI per game (5.8) and Fielding Percentage (.960) in which they are 23rd in each.
Multi-Hit Stars - Davenport's
Amber Getty and
KC Dunne are two of the top-6 hitters in the WHAC and they also are having great success with muli-hit games. The duo is tied for the team lead with 15 multi-hit games while
Ashleigh Blovsky,
Carli SanMillan and
Debra Burton are tied for third with eight each. As a team DU has 76.
