Tidey Interview
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Drew Sain tossed his first complete-game of the season and added a season-high six strikeouts as he and the Davenport baseball team got back to its winning ways by holding off Cornerstone 4-1 on a windy and rainy Wednesday afternoon at Cornerstone's under-construction DeWitt Field. While the Panthers won the inaugural meeting, both teams didn't take the field for game two as the expectation of a thunderstorm arrived during the ninth inning of game one. Both teams have yet to announce their makeup date.
Although Sain (3-0) went the distance, he surrendered four hits and a season-most six walk to first base.
Davenport (24-12, 9-6 Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference) broke the ice in the second inning.
Michael Allen led off with a walk and after a stolen base followed by a sacrifice bunt;
Eric Cummings drove in the run with a single to left.
The one-two combo of
Cam Cooper and
Derek Dennis both had a pair of hits but they provided the runs that proved the difference in the third inning. Cooper won a free pass to first and with Dennis at the plate, he sent a pitch to the outfield and a mistake in left field allowed Cooper to score the eventual winning run. Woo followed hitting a grounder to the shortstop but a throwing error to first allowed Dennis to score the insurance run.
Cornerstone (11-21, 6-11 WHAC) got on the board in the fifth but the Panthers added one more run in the seventh. Bortell led off with a single and scored on Woo's fly ball to left.
The Panthers are slated to return to the Farmers Athletic Complex this weekend, hosting Lourdes Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
