Ind. Tech - Live Video
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – After suffering a pair of losses to cross-town rival Cornerstone on Tuesday, the Davenport softball team gets right back at it this weekend when they will play a crucial four game stretch against Madonna and Indiana Tech. The Panthers will head to Livonia on Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Crusaders before coming back home to host the Warriors on Sunday on senior day.
Rain Cancels Hope Doubleheader - Mother nature won again this week as it claimed another cancellation due to rain. The Panthers DH against non-conference Hope College was cancelled on Thursday due to almost 4 inches of rain in the GR area. No makeup date will be scheduled as it was a non-conference tilt.
Around the WHAC - Rain continues to play havoc on the conference schedule but most teams were able to get in at least a pair of games earlier this week. Cornerstone swept DU to take over sole possession of first place at 7-1 while Madonna suffered a rare defeat to UM-Dearborn to fall a game behind. DU is third at 7-3 while Aquinas is next at 3-3. Siena Heights, Indiana Tech and Concordia are all within one game of each other.
A Quick Look at Madonna - Madonna, picked to win the conference title in the preseason poll, got off to a slow start but has rebounded to post an impressive 25-13 record entering weekend play. 15th year head coach Al White has his team in position for another shot at a WHAC title behind the bats of Erin Mayes (.370) and Caitlyn Keuvelaar (7 homeruns). On the mound, MU possesses two solid pitchers in Bree Crampton (two-time WHAC Pitcher of the Week) and Carlee Meek (9-1 record, 2.88 ERA)
A Quick Look at Indiana Tech - Head coach Becky Norris is in her ninth season at the helm of the Warrior softball program and after losing their first nine games, have gone .500 since at 9-9 to stand 9-18 overall. Norris is led by Patrice Suplicki at the plate batting .387 while Jessica Cotton leads the team with five homers and 19 RBI. On the mound, Tech is led by Sam Berrios who has posted a 4-9 record with a 2.99 ERA. She also leads the team in strikeouts with 47.
A Rivalry Renewed with the Crusaders - Davenport and Madonna have developed quite the rivalry in the short 4-year history of the Panther program. The two are tied in wins against each other at 10-10 and they have had some classic battles especially in the WHAC Tournament over the last three years. Madonna struck first in the '10 tourney when they came back and won two straight against DU when even down to their last strike. The next year,
Amber Getty's walk-off grand-slam thwarted another Crusader rally to send the Panthers to their first ever NAIA National Tournament. Then last season, MU posted a 1-0, eight inning victory in the winner's bracket semifinal to lift them to another tournament title run.
