Panthers Sweep Crusaders in Crucial WHAC Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Game Notes for Sunday

LIVONIA, Mich. - Davenport traveled to the east side of the state for an important Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader against Madonna and came away with a sweep winning 4-0 and 3-2 in eight innings. The two wins lift the Panthers to 26-11-1 on the season and solidifies the team in second place in the conference at 9-3. DU will host Indiana Tech on Sunday as they celebrate senior day for Sam Cole. The first pitch of game one is slated for 1 p.m. at the Farmers Athletic Complex

Game 1 - W, 4-0

Sam Cole was brilliant on the mound for Davenport as the senior allowed only three hits and seven total baserunners while picking up her fourth shutout of the season. Cole struck out one batter in route to picking up her 16th win of the season and break a two-game skid as a starter.

In their first matchup since the 2012 WHAC Tournament semifinals in which MU won in extra innings 1-0, Davenport put up a pair of runs in each of the third and sixth innings for the only scoring of the game. KC Dunne got the scoring started with a double in the third that brought home Amber Getty and Sara Schneidenbach and then Paige Sant'Angelo and Debra Burton each had an RBI in the sixth.

Game 2 - W, 3-2 (8)

Kelly DuCharme picked a great game to post the first RBI of her career and Paige Sant'Angelo hit her first homerun of the season to give the Panthers a much needed sweep to stay alive in the conference race. The Panthers started the scoring in the second inning when DuCharme, who got the start in left field, singled home Sant'Angelo and Alexis Powell. That scoring gave DU a two-run cushion in which they held until MU put up one run in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game and send it into extra innings.

Leading off the top of the eighth was Sant'Angelo and the sophomore sent a 0-1 pitch over the left-center wall giving the Panthers their lead back at 3-2. Sam Cole came in relief of starter Kyleigh Linebaugh to pick up her second win of the day and 17th of the season by finishing off the Crusaders in the bottom half of the inning.

Linebaugh went five innings while only allowing one run on three hits and striking out one.

Davenport will now play their final regular season games at home on Sunday when they welcome in Indiana Tech for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Just before the start of the opener, the coaching staff and team will recognize the lone senior Sam Cole for her accomplishments over the last four years.

Post-Game Quotes - Head coach Ronda Varnesdeel

“It was great to see our team bounce back after two disappointing home losses earlier this week. Timely hits played a key role for us today two big wins over a great team in Madonna. We know that the road will be difficult to garner another WHAC championship, but I do believe this team is ready to go to battle one game at a time.”
