GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – With six games - four in Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference play - remaining in the regular season, the Davenport baseball team will be looking to earn a spot in the conference tournament beginning next week. The Panthers will close out the home portion of their schedule against Northwood and Olivet Wednesday and Thursday, respectively, and will hit the road to play at conference foes Indiana Tech Friday and Saturday.

The Panthers throw the first pitch against the Timberwolves at 6:30 p.m., the Comets at 7 p.m. and at the Warriors at 3 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.

Davenport, which is 29-12 overall and 14-6 in the WHAC, currently sits at third place in the league standings and only five qualify for the tournament.

Before Wednesday's first pitch against Northwood, Davenport will be receiving a piece of its history. Jim Rooney will be presenting the Panthers a photo of the 1910 McLaughlin University baseball team, which his uncle, James, played for. Davenport took over McLaughlin in the 1920s.

The Timberwolves, a member of the NCAA Division II GLIAC, is coming off a three-game league sweep against Tiffin. Jake Oard paces the ballclub with a .283 average. He and Eric Altman both lead the team with 15 RBI and the Timberwolves blasted three home runs, with Tyler Beatty hitting two.

The Comets recently snapped their three-game losing streak with a 4-1 MIAA win at Alma Sunday. Only four Olivet players are hitting over .300 with Andrew Brawley leads the way with a .370 average. Brawley is also pacing the team with 21 RBI and has hit the only homer this season.

The Warriors may have had to cancel three of their last six games due to weather but they have won six straight games. Before it hosts Davenport Friday and Saturday, Indiana Tech will make a day trip to Lima, Ohio to play Northwestern Ohio Wednesday. The Warriors are led by Justin Kalusa, who is hitting .372 with 14 two-baggers, two triples and home runs each and 31 RBI. He has also stolen 11 bags.
