GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team put together an offensive explosion against Northwood in a non-conference matchup Wednesday.
Andrew Kawam recorded three of the Panthers' 18-hit evening and also drove in a season-high four runs to help them break down the Timberwolves 18-2 at the Farmers Athletic Complex.
Eric Cummings had a productive day with the bat as he had a double to his two-hit day and brought home three runners.
Derek Dennis and Edward Grochowalski Jr. also had a multi-hit outing with both infielders scoring two runs.
The Panthers (30-12) scored all the runs they needed to win the game in the second inning. Grochowalski got the ballclub started with a double down the left field line, Woo reached on a fielding error and moved to second on a passed ball to set up for Cummings two-run double to right center.
Carlos Berroa followed with another double to bring Cummings home and after Kawam singled on a bunt,
Jordan Schumann and
Cam Cooper both brought in the Panthers fourth and fifth runs. Like Cummings,
Michael Allen found an open gap in right center for an RBI two-bagger and in his second plate appearance in the inning, Grochowalski delivered an RBI single. Grochowalski tried to score from second on Woo's single to shortstop but the Timberwolves catcher did not expect the throw home, allowing the Panthers to easily score the eighth run.
While the Panthers bats dismantled the Timberwolves (15-19),
Bobby Walter had a solid outing, going six innings allowing two runs on four hits and walks each to improve his record to 5-1.
Garrett Lovik went the rest of the way by firing three shutout innings for his first save of the year.
Davenport will close out the home portion of the regular-season schedule against Olivet College Thursday at 7 p.m. before hitting the road to Indiana Tech Friday and Saturday.
