Softball Team Concludes Regular Season Friday at UM-Dearborn

Game Notes | Live Stats for Dearborn

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Still very much alive in the race for their third straight Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championship, the Davenport Softball team travels to UM-Dearborn on Friday to face the Wolves in the final doubleheader of the regular season. Head coach Ronda Varnesdeel and her team is one game behind WHAC-leading Cornerstone with one weekend of play remaining. DU is 11-3 in conference play while CU is 10-2 with four games to play against Concordia and Indiana Tech.

Searching for Another Title - Davenport, who has won the last two Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference championships, is still very much in the hunt for their third straight title with just a couple of games remaining. DU is one game back of Cornerstone as the Panthers have two games remaining and the Golden Eagles four. If the two teams tie, they will split the conference crown (second straight split for DU).

Around the WHAC - In the final four days of the regular season, most schools are in scramble mode of trying to finish their mandatory two-games against each opponent. Davenport is not one of them as they only have one DH remaining against Dearborn. The Panthers currently sit one game behind Cornerstone in the standings as CU has Concordia and Tech still on their schedule. A sweep by DU over the Wolves and just one loss by the Golden Eagles would mean a tie in the regular season standings. Seeds 3-5 are still wide open between Madonna, Concordia and Aquinas.

A Quick Look at UM-Dearborn - The Wolves enter this week 1-10 in conference play and are just 5-29 overall. Davenport and Dearborn met earlier this season at the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. with the Panthers winning 10-1 in five innings. Head coach Sarah Rotta is in her sixth year guiding the Wolves and she is led at the plate by Jessie Thueme who is batting .295. Thueme also leads the team with 16 RBI while the Wolves are led by Lindsay Colasinski on the mound with a .5.05 ERA. Erika Southworth leads Dearborn with 38 strikeouts.

NAIA Top-25 Poll - Two teams from the WHAC are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top-25 poll. Cornerstone, who leads the conference standings currently, is the highest ranked team while Davenport is also in the section. At the end of the year, the national tournament bids will be decided on the rankings with 40 teams getting into the opening round from May 13-15.

Six Runs is the Mark? - Davenport, which has always had a powerful offense, is used to putting up lots of runs and this year is no different. The Panthers hold an impressive 21-2 overall record when scoring at least six runs this year. DU has been shutout only twice so far in 2013 and has scored 251 runs in their 40 games.
