Tidey Interview
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Jotham Woo and
Michael Allen had career bests in the RBI department as the three-four hitting combo steered the Davenport baseball team to a doubleheader sweep over Concordia Saturday afternoon at the Farmers Athletic Complex. Allen drove in five RBI in during DU's 9-2 game one win while the fellow senior Woo copied his teammate and drove in five runs in the Panthers 13-2 game two victory. Davenport will look to sweep the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference series Sunday at 1 p.m.
Woo also had a double and a triple on the afternoon, while the catcher Allen had a pair of doubles as well as his second home run of the season. Four Panthers (19-10, 6-4 WHAC) also collected three hits each.
Derek Dennis, one of the four Panthers, added four runs scored to his double and triple.
Ryan Butzer also had a busy day as he appeared in both games, combining for four shutout innings pitched while scattering three hits and striking out two.
Game One
After
Drew Sain (2-0) retired the Cardinals (4-22, 3-12 WHAC) in order to start the contest, the Panthers went to work on their starting pitcher Ty Wilson (0-4). Dennis and Woo both singled into the outfield to set up Allen's two-run base hit to left center, and with the help of a throwing error,
Eric Cummings brought courtesy runner
Andrew Kawam home with a single up the middle.
Although the Cardinals used back-to-back leadoff singles to score their first run in the second, the Panthers added on to the lead in the third when Allen, with a little help from the wind, sent a pitch over the left field fence for a two-run home run to give Davenport a 5-1 lead.
Concordia also countered and used the wind for a solo shot to left center in the fourth.
Sain went on to finish six strong innings, striking out four while scattering six hits. Butzer went the rest of the way for the senior starter allowing only two hits.
Game Two
Much like game one, the Panthers jumped ahead on Concordia's Nate McHugh (0-2). Cooper led off the game for DU with a single to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch, and although he laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, Dennis was allowed to reach on a fielding error. Woo would punish the Cardinals for their defensive mistake by sending a pitch over the center fielder's head for a two-run triple. Davenport would take a 3-0 lead on Edward Grochowalski Jr.'s RBI single to right.
Corey Sessions (3-1) would surrender a leadoff double followed by an RBI single in the second inning, but his teammates would help him out by getting that three-run back and adding more in their half of the frame.
Jordan Schumann,
Tyler Berger and
Carlos Berroa would open up the inning loading the bases on singles and a catcher's interference before Cooper's RBI groundout and Woo's two-run single extended DU's lead to 6-1.
Despite going down without getting a run across in the third, the Panthers went the rest of the game score a run per frame. Starting in the fourth, Dennis and Woo reached on a double and a walk, respectively, before Allen's two-run double. One inning later, the Panthers used nearly everything minus a home run to reach base and score four runs.
Sessions carried the Panthers to the sixth inning before
Corey Anderson, Butzer and
Colton Satterlee combined for two hits and two strikeouts the rest of the way.
