GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Ashleigh Blovsky provided a huge three-run homerun in game one then
Amber Getty's big game two at the plate was matched by freshman
Kyleigh Linebaugh's performance on the mound to lift the Panthers to a sweep of visiting Siena Heights on Saturday. The pair of wins lifts DU to 21-8-1 on the season and 4-0 in league play. The Panthers will travel to Lourdes to face the league newcomer Gray Wolves on Sunday afternoon in a doubleheader.
Amber Getty continued her outstanding play at the dish as the junior went 3-6 on the day with a double, triple and five RBI. She was helped by three hits from
Debra Burton and two from
Sarah Schneidenbach,
KC Dunne and
Ashleigh Blovsky who also connected on her team-leading eighth homerun of the year which ended up being the game winner in the opener.
Game 1 – W, 4-3
Siena Heights did what most teams had not done all year against starter
Sam Cole; get to the senior pitcher early as they put up three runs in the opening three innings to take a 3-1 lead. DU's lone run came after
Amber Getty led off the DU at-bat in the first with a double and was brought home on a groundout from Schneidenbach.
The score would stay the same until the sixth when
Sarah Schneidenbach hustled out a single to lead off the inning and was followed by a single from
KC Dunne. Both scored on the next at-bat when
Ashleigh Blovsky belted a three-run homerun to left center to put the Panthers up 4-1.
Sam Cole settled down after the slow start and retired 12 of the last 13 batters she faced with SHU getting only one runner on after the third inning to pick up her 14
th win of the season. Cole finished the complete game with seven strikeouts, one off of her season high.
Game 2 – W, 8-0 (5)
After an early threat by the Saints in the first in which they put a runner on third with only one out, DU starter
Kyleigh Linebaugh was brilliant, posting her second shutout of the season and not allowing a run for the second straight game in league play.
The Davenport bats awoke in the second when
Amber Getty hit a bases clearing triple and then the junior followed with a two-RBI double in the fourth to finish the game with five RBI, marking the third time she has accomplished that feat this season.
With a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, DU got a pair of singles to start from
KC Dunne and
Ashleigh Blovsky. A
Carli SanMillan fielder's choice scored Dunne and then after another out,
Debra Burton doubled down the left field line to score both
Melissa Covert and
Karli Myers to post the mercy rule at 8-0.
Linebaugh's win was her sixth of the year and second shutout as the freshman finished allowing only three hits while striking out two.
Davenport will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Sylvania, Ohio to face league newcomer Lourdes University. The doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. star and live stats will be provided.
