Lawrence Interview
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Leadoff hitter
Cam Cooper had four hits, including a two-run single, and scored three times as he and the Davenport baseball team took another doubleheader victory over Concordia at the Farmers Athletic Complex Sunday afternoon. The Panthers halted a late Cardinal rally to win game one 7-5 and had to dig out of a very early hole to take game two 10-4 as well as sweep the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference series.
Jotham Woo and
Michael Allen continue to have hot bats. Woo had three hits, including a pair of doubles and three RBI, Allen had two hits but drove in four RBI on the afternoon. The Panthers (21-10, 8-4 WHAC) also got a pair of runs driven by Cooper,
Jordan Schumann,
Carlos Berroa and
Eric Cummings.
The Panthers will resume their crosstown rivalry with Aquinas Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Game One
Although the Cardinals (4-24, 3-14 WHAC) got on the board first in the third inning using a one-out triple and a fielding error to score a run, the Panthers answered back in their half of the frame.
Tyler Berger led off with a walk, Cooper singled to through the right side to set up back-to-back RBI doubles from Woo and Allen. Woo drove in the tying run while Allen brought in a pair to take a 3-1 lead.
The difference in the game was in sixth and seventh innings, when the Panthers scored two runs in each inning. In the sixth, Allen led off reaching on a throwing error, Edward Grochowalski Jr. singled and Cummings was hit by the pitch to load the bases. Schumann forced in a run home after being awarded a walk and a sacrifice fly by Berroa extended the lead to 5-1.
One inning later, Woo and Allen opened the inning with a walk and hit-by-pitch, respectively, and they scored on a sacrifice fly from Cummings followed by a single through the right side by Schumann.
Michael Clutterbuck (4-3) was untouchable until the eighth inning, when the Cardinals took advantage of two Panther errors to score four runs. Clutterbuck was one out short from escaping the jam but
Ryan Butzer preserved the starter's win as well as received his fourth save of the year. Clutterbuck punched out five while surrendering eight hits.
Game Two
The Cardinals would score all four of their runs in the game.
Danny Sullivan (4-2) retired the leadoff hitter but ran into trouble after hitting the next batter as well as surrendering a triple, double and a pair of singles.
Davenport helped its pitcher out by getting three of those runs back. Cooper led off with a single and
Derek Dennis reached on a fielding error before back-to-back singles by Woo and Allen cut the deficit in half. Cummings would bring the third run in with a groundout.
Concordia failed to hold onto the lead in the fourth inning as back-to-back singles from Schumann and Berger set up an RBI double by Berroa followed by a two-run single from Cooper to give the Panthers a 7-4 lead.
After getting rattled in the first inning, Sullivan immediately settled down and put together a gem outing, surrendering two hits and striking out five before handing the ball to
Colton Satterlee in the seventh.
Post-Game Notes
Davenport improves to 10-4 all-time against Concordia…After going hitless in both games,
Derek Dennis saw his hitting streak come to an end at 12 games, tying Derek Gentile for third best in program history…
Michael Allen, who has reached base safely in both games, has extended that streak to 24 games.
