Softball Sweeps Lourdes; Outscores Gray Wolves 16-1 on the Day

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport completed a perfect week by finishing off the newest members of the conference, Lourdes University, in a doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers defeated the Gray Wolves 6-1 in the opener before walking away with a 10-0 victory in the nightcap. Davenport, winners of their first six games to open league play, improves to 23-8-1 on the year and will welcome in Cornerstone for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Game 1 - W, 6-1

Davenport greeted the league newcomers early and often as they jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on a bases loaded walk in the top of the first. Unfortunately, DU could not add to their lead with all of the baserunners in the opening frame but the Panthers struck in five of the seven innings overall for the 6-1 win.

Amber Getty again came up with a big hit, extending her hitting streak into the second game of the DH with a two-RBI double in the sixth that scored both Karli Myers and Debra Burton on the play. LU did get one run in the bottom half of the inning but that would be all that Sam Cole would allow as the senior improved to 15-4 on the year with the win.

Burton, Myers and KC Dunne all collected two hits in the game while five different players finished with at least one RBI.

Game 2 - W, 10-0

Kyleigh Linebaugh continued her outstanding pitching as the freshman went all seven innings to post her third straight game of not allowing a single run and improving her overall record to 7-4.

Linebaugh got plenty of support from another balanced hitting lineup that saw the Panthers post 10 hits in the seven innings. Ashleigh Blovsky broke open a close game in the third and fifth innings with a pair of RBI singles and the scoring was culminated on a three-run homerun off the bat of Amber Getty in the top of the seventh.

The trio of Getty, KC Dunne and Blovsky went a combined 8-12 with three runs scored and eight RBI in the victory that helped DU stay without a blemish in league play through six games.

Davenport has another six-game week that starts off with Cornerstone on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Farmers Athletic Complex. The Golden Eagles are one game behind the Panthers in the WHAC standings.

Post-Game Quotes - Head coach Ronda Varnesdeel

On play of Kyleigh Linebaugh - "Kyleigh has really settled in on the mound...Physically she has come a long way but her mental composure and confidence has been impressive for a young pitcher. She is becoming a student of the game and is constantly looking for ways to become a better pitcher"
