MOBILE, Ala. – Davenport's first ever appearance in the NAIA National Tournament was a quick one as they fell 8-1 to No. 14 ranked Olivet Nazarene in their opening match on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers got their lone point from their only senior,
Katie VanDerLaan, as they end their season with an overall record of 20-10. The Tigers advance to Wednesday's second round to face No. 3 Brenau (Ga.).
Although the final score was 8-1, Davenport made a big splash in their first ever appearance in the national tournament and it all started with three close doubles matches in which the Panthers were unable to grab a point.
The top pair of Emily Speich and
Alyssa Fuentes dropped just their second match of the season as they fell 8-5. A third doubles, the score was even closer as
Kristi Kuzdal and Katie VamDerLaan fell by the slimmest of margins 8-6. ONU grabbed the final point with an 8-3 win at No. 2
Turning to singles, where the Panthers needed five out of the six to claim the match, DU only managed one as senior
Katie VanDerLaan finished her career with a win as she posted a 7-6 (4), 5-7, 10-6 win for the Panthers lone point.
ONU posted straight set wins in each of the others to claim the match 8-1.
Davenport ends its season at 20-10 overall and will return five of their top six players next season for head coach
