GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team saw its run in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament come to an end as Aquinas held the Panthers to four hits while scoring four runs in the fifth to run away with a 5-1 win Thursday afternoon at the Farmers Athletic Complex. The Panthers will wait to see if their season resume, which includes a 36-14 record, will be enough to receive an at-large bid to the NAIA Tournament.
Derek Dennis,
Jotham Woo, Edward Grochowalski Jr., and
Eric Cummings each had a base hit for the Panthers.
Zach Liebman (4-1) was handed his first loss of the year after surrendering five runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits and two walks.
Ryan Butzer made his third straight appearance and held the Saints scoreless for 3.1 innings.
Both Davenport and Aquinas found a way to get a run in during the opening inning.
Cam Cooper led off the game with a walk, advanced to third on
Derek Dennis' single and scored on
Jotham Woo's base hit through the left side. Aquinas counterattacked with a leadoff double and used a passed ball and a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game.
The Saints broke the one-run tie and added more in the fifth. Liebman had two outs in the frame but an RBI single and a two-run double gave the Saints a 4-1 lead.
