ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. – In a game that was delayed by more than two hours because of inclement weather, Davenport scored three second half goals and held off a furious comeback from the host Robert Morris Eagles as they posted a 4-2 win on Wednesday night just outside of Chicago. The victory lifts the Panthers to 6-2-0 on the year as they now will turn their attention towards WHAC play that starts Saturday at Indiana Tech.
The Panthers and Eagles (2-3-1) waited for over two hours due to a storm that moved through the area and each came out a little sluggish early in the opening half. Just over 10 minutes in however, Stuart Collins sent a ball into the Eagle box and it reflected off a defender and into the net to put the Panthers on top 1-0.
That would be the score as the match went into halftime with the Eagles holding a slim 2-1 edge in shots on goal.
Looking to put some distance between them and the home team, Davenport came out strong in the second half and got their second goal of the game when Jai Maw went one on one with a defender and beat him and the keeper with a shot low and right into the back of the net.
Just minutes later, Dino Duratovic made the RMU keeper pay for a mistake and he used the stolen ball deep in the box and put it away for a 3-0 DU lead with 35 minutes to play. Unfortunately, the Eagles kept up some pressure and got on the board with a PK in the 64th minute and then just three minutes later got their second on a header off an RMU corner.
After the Eagles made a few good runs but were unsuccessful, Davenport got an insurance goal from freshman TJ Ifaturoti with 8:30 to play to put the Panthers up 4-2.
Post-Match Quotes - Head coach Chris Hughes
On the mental battle of overcoming weather delay - "It was tough but the coaches and players alike just wanted to keep the guys focused and then most of the first half was each team just feeling each other out and trying to get settled after just 12 minutes of warmup"
On being 6-2 heading into WHAC play - "We have learned a lot and are still learning. With a great core and some solid young pieced around that core, we continue to get better and continue to push each other every day."
Post-Match Notes
