Next DU event: Wednesday, Oct. 1 – vs. UM-Dearborn – 7 p.m.
LIVONIA, Mich. – Davenport will come home for their first match of the season on the DU Turf Field with an outright lead in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) after defeating Madonna University 4-1 on Saturday afternoon. Head coach Chris Hughes and his team finish their 11-match road swing to start the season at 9-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in league action. DU will host UM-Dearborn on Wednesday, October 1 at 7 p.m.
Looking to finish their long road stretch to start the 2013 season on a high note, the Panthers posted a solid 4-1 win at Madonna on Saturday to keep them perfect in WHAC play at 3-0.
Senior Jai Maw got the Panthers on the board just under 20 minutes into the match as he scored off of a restart from just outside the 18-yard box. Davenport added to their lead just nine minutes later when freshman TJ Ifaturoti scored on a cross from Dino Duratovic.
The Crusaders cut the lead in half on a penalty kick goal with about 10 minutes to play in the first half and the Panthers went into the locker room leading 2-1.
Looking for an insurance goal early the second to separate themselves from the host Crusaders, DU got not one, but two tallies from freshman Dzenan Catic which were the 11th and 12th of the season for the midfielder. The goals came in the 51st and 55th minutes.
The Davenport defense then hung tough for the remainder of the match allowing a total of five shots on the day, of which DU keeper Mirza Harambasic came up with three saves.
Davenport will look to extend their lead in the conference when they meet UM-Dearborn on Wednesday in the first home match of the season for the Panthers. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. or shortly following the women's match.
Post-Match Notes
Davenport now has sole possession of first place in the conference for the first time since early November of the 2010 season…Dzenan Catic has scored five goals in his past two contests…DU takes a one game series lead against Madonna all-time (now 8-7)
