BYRON CENTER, Mich. – The Panthers D3 hockey team defeated Lansing Community College 6-3 in the opening of the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference tournament Friday afternoon.
Dugan Kelly completed a minor comeback with a second-period goal and the Panthers defense held onto the lead the rest of the way. As DU opened the MCHC Tournament, it returns to Southside Ice Arena Saturday for round two against the opponent to be announced later tonight.
LCC scored less than 30 seconds into the game and followed up with another goal two minutes later. The Panthers responded around the eight-minute mark in the first period with a goal from
Donald Sund.
Daniel Swink was able to capture one last goal within the finals minutes to tie game two apiece entering the first break.
Lansing regained the lead 5:28 into the middle period. But the lead would last only five minutes as Sund answered back with a goal in front of the net. The Panthers took their first lead of the game with three minutes left in the second after Jordan Stegger skipped a pass to Kelly who drove it right to the back of net.
Alexander Stewart scored a goal just past the half way point in the third period to give Davenport the 5-3 lead. Kelly net the Panthers sixth and final goal of the game with less than a minute left.
