BYRON CENTER, Mich. – The Panthers came out on top against Calvin College in round two of the Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference (MCHC) Tournament after breaking a second period tie and going on to win 5-2. The Knights tied the game in the beginning of the second but DU would keep them scoreless for the rest of the game while adding three more goals themselves. With the win, Davenport will have a head-to-head meeting with the other finalist team to play for MCHC West Division title on Feb. 28.
Davenport took the early lead over Calvin when
Alexander Stewart fed a pass to
Jordan Steger who finished with a wrist shot to the back of the net at the two minute mark. The Knights responded with a goal at the eight minutes later that tied the game at 1-1.
Daniel Swink gave DU the lead going into the second with a late first period goal.
Calvin created a 2-2 tie situation with a goal three minutes into the second that put the pressure back on Davenport.
Dugan Kelly started a string of passes by flicking the puck to
Jake Otto who immediately passed it to
Donald Sund for the goal at the 15 minute mark. Otto later gave DU the 4-2 lead over Calvin and some room to breathe after Swink slipped a front and center pass to him that would finish out the period.
D3 hockey held their 4-2 lead over the Knights until Steger was able to score one last goal with nine seconds remaining in the game to complete their 5-2 win.
