LAKELAND, Fla. – Davenport looked to avoid their second straight loss in Florida on Wednesday but eight stranded runners in a 7-inning game were too much to overcome as they fell 6-3 to Southeastern University. The game was the first of what was supposed to be a double-header but rain forced the postponement of the second as the two teams will make it up at 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon. The loss drops the Panthers to 5-3 on the season.
The Panthers continued their tour through the Sun Conference opponents on Wednesday as they fell 6-3 to Southeastern University in Lakeland. DU starter
Alex Schuiling was charged with the loss as the sophomore gave up four runs, although only one of those was earned while striking out one and walking four.
Davenport struck first in the top of the first but left the bases loaded and it would be a sign of things to come. The Fire came back with three runs in their half of the second to take they lead in which they would never let up. After a short five-minute delay for rain, the teams came back out and DU got to within 4-3 in the top of the fourth when
Jordan Zylstra singled home
Cam Cooper but it would be the last the Panthers brought a runner across the plate.
The Fire added two runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth and then the rains came and forced a 91 minute delay. When it looked as if the game might get postponed, the teams returned to action only to see DU never threaten again as they fell by the final of 6-3.
DU and Southeastern will return to the field tomorrow to finish the "double-header" as the first pitch will be at 1 p.m. in a single 7-inning contest. The Panthers will then travel over to Babson Park to take on Webber International at 7 p.m. in a 9-inning game.
