Next DU event: Thursday, March 1 – vs. No. 19 Point Park (Pa.) - DH (Winter Haven, Fla.) – 1 p.m.
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The Davenport baseball team saw two different results in a doubleheader against two different schools at Lake Myrtle Park Friday afternoon. The Panthers bats awoke and used 13 hits and took advantage of six errors to pound Hannibal-LaGrange 13-0 in game one. A few hours later, DU's scored two runs to tie the game while going hitless in seven innings but a bases loaded, walk-off single allowed Ashland to escape with a 3-2 11-inning nightcap.
The Panthers (7-5) will shift over to Chain O' Lakes in Winter Haven for the remaining four games this weekend starting with a doubleheader against No. 19 Point Park (Pa.) Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Davenport 13, Hannibal-LaGrange 0
It was an all-around performance for Panthers against the Trojans (3-6-1). While Davenport relied on the 13 singles and six errors recorded,
Jerry Ferris was well in control on the mound, striking out a season-high eight batters and allowing five hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Jonathan Cheshire took over and finished the game striking out three and walking one.
Ten different Panthers recorded a hit against the Trojans.
Nolan Wilson had three hits and
EJ Grochowalski tallied two.
Davenport scored the only run it needed in the opening frame.
Derek Dennis, returning to the lineup for the first time since Sunday, reached on an error with one out and scored on Grochowalski's single to right.
Leading 3-0 heading into the fifth, Davenport did serious damage by bringing five runs across using four hits, two walks, a sacrifice bunt and an error.
Game 2 – Ashland 3, Davenport 2 (11 innings)
The Eagles opened their season taking a 2-0 lead after five innings. Despite not being able to break down the Eagles pitching staff from the start, Davenport managed to tie the game without tallying a hit.
Cam Cooper and
Connor Seymour drew back-to-back one-out walks. While Seymour was at the plate, Cooper made his way to third when the Eagles battery committed both a passed ball and wild pitch. With runners at the corners, a successful double steal was signaled to drive in the first run. Two more mistakes by the Eagles battery allowed Seymour to tie the game two runs apiece.
Davenport escaped the no-hit bid in the eighth when Seymour led off with a single to center.
Despite scattering eight hits,
Corey Sessions did not issue any free passes and added five strikeouts next to it.
Ryan Butzer also showed a solid outing until the 11
th inning, when the Eagles hit back-to-back singles put two runners in scoring position. After an intentional walk set up a play at any base, Ashland punished them with a walk-off single to right center.
