BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Trailing all throughout the rubber match of the three-game series, the Davenport baseball team rally became complete when it evened the contest five runs apiece in the seventh inning and used five hits and two Union errors to run away with a 10-6 victory Sunday afternoon. The Panthers, who finishing the season-opening weekend with a 3-1 record, will make a return to Kentucky next weekend to play a four-game set at Georgetown starting Saturday at 1 p.m.
Davenport combined for 14 hits for the third consecutive game.
Brendan Bender led the way with four hits while
Connor Seymour and
Jordan Zylstra added three. Seymour also stretched one of his hits into a double for the Panthers only extra bagger.
After the visiting Panthers brought two runs across in the opening frame, the Bulldogs (2-3) quickly went to work on starter
Jordan Anderson, scoring four runs on six hits in their half of the inning. DU would turn over to the bullpen in the second inning.
Corey Murphy surrendered one run on five hits and a walk while striking out six.
Ryan Butzer (1-1) was credited his first win of the season after throwing 2 2/3 innings, conceding one run on a hit and walk.
Trailing 5-3 entering the seventh,
Derek Dennis led off the inning with a free pass and advanced to second when pinch-hitter
Eric Cummings reached on a fielding error. Both runners would advance a base when Seymour grounded out.
Cody Greear drew a walk to load the bases and Zylstra's single down the left field line brought in two runs to even the score.
Following scoreless eighth inning, the Panthers opened the ninth with pinch-hitter
Zac Wilson singling to left.
Ryan Manning followed reaching first on a bunt and a throwing error by Union third baseman Jared Tomany moved both runners into scoring position. Seymour sent a pitch to right field to bring in the go-ahead run and Greear's sacrifice fly sent Manning home to give Davenport a 7-5 lead. Zylstra and Bender went back-to-back with base hits to bring Seymour home and a throwing error by catcher Jackson Arnett during
EJ Grochowalski's attempt to steal second brought home Bender.
Zack Sardellitti drove in the 10
th run with a single to left.
