GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Seventeen was the number of the day for the Davenport baseball team as that was the number of runs it put on the board in each of the two games over Lourdes Friday. The Panthers christened the second season at Farmers Athletic Complex taking game one 17-8 and shutting out the Gray Wolves 17-0. The two Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference foes return to the Panthers ballpark to wrap up the four-game set Saturday at 1 p.m.

Brenden Bender highlighted the day for the Panthers (10-7, 2-0 WHAC) by knocking in eight runs in game one. He finished the day going 7-for-9 at the plate with four two-baggers. EJ Grochowalski had a productive day with his bat as he tallied five hits with two of them reaching on doubles.

Game 1 – Davenport 17, Lourdes 8
Davenport quickly broke the ice in the first inning with back-to-back two-out doubles Zac Wilson and Bender. The Panthers took a 2-0 lead one inning later when Zack Sardellitti led off with a single and scored on Jordan Schumann's single to right center.

The Gray Wolves (0-6, 0-2 WHAC) got their bats to wake in the third on starter Corey Sessions, putting six hits including a double and a triple to bring home six runners to take a one-run lead. Sessions would end his day going 2 2/3 with two strikeouts.

Lourdes' lead did not last long as the Panthers quickly answered back. Davenport instantly loaded the bases on two singles and a walk and Bender did his job as the cleanup hitter by driving in two runs on a base hit to right. Grochowalski followed with an RBI single through the left side.

The Panthers would add two more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and sixth and seven in the eighth to run away with the win.

After Alex Schuiling (1-1) fired three three-hit and one run inning of work, Ryan Butzer went the rest of the way producing the same result to earn his first save of the season.

Game 2 – Davenport 17, Lourdes 0
Davenport did all the damage it needed to sweep the doubleheader by scoring eight runs in the first two frames. Zylstra led off the first with a walk and scored on Wilson's ground out. Bender reached on a single and scored on a fielding error by the Gray Wolves.

Lourdes starter Josh Payzant (0-1) struggled in his outing as he hit two and walked two while the Panthers tallied three hits including back-to-back doubles to score six runs.

The Panthers added onto their lead in the late inning, scoring two in the fourth and three each in the fifth and six.

Corey Murphy (2-1) allowed three hits and a pair of walks in six innings of work. He also punched out three batters. Jonathan Cheshire took over in the seventh and allowed only one walk.
