GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Despite fighting back to force extra frames, the Davenport baseball team made two errors in the ninth that proved costly in a 7-3 game one loss to Rochester College. After a brief intermission, the Panthers returned to the diamond with a different look as Corey Murphy fired six shutout innings and the Panthers offense put 12 runs in the sixth to post a 15-0 victory and split the series Thursday afternoon.

Due to unplayable conditions at Saint Xavier's campus, the Cougars will now visit the Farmers Athletic Complex to face the Panthers Saturday. First pitch is to be announced later.

Eric Cummings had a four-hit day to lead the department while Brendan Bender and Derek Dennis had the only extra base hits. Dennis also had five RBI including a three-run inside-the-park home run.

Game 1 – Rochester 7, Davenport 3 (9 Innings)
Davenport struck first in the opening frame when a failed pickoff attempt at second allowed Jordan Zylstra to move to third and score on Bender's groundout.

The lead did not last long as the Panthers saw themselves trailing 2-0 after the Warriors scored a run in both the second and third.

Despite the offensive struggles, Corey Sessions helped keep the Panthers in the game after throwing six innings on the mound surrendering six hits and a walk while punching out four batters.

Trailing by one heading into the seventh, the Panthers crawled in the tying run. Cody Greear reached on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on Eric Cummings through the left side and scored on Nolan Wilson's single through the left side. Although the Warriors regained the lead in the eighth, Davenport answered back in its half when back-to-back leadoff singles set up the tying run in scoring position and Zylstra scored when EJ Grochowalski reached on an error. The Warriors escaped a bases-loaded threat when two groundouts ended the inning.

Rochester would do all the damage it needed to walk away with the win by scoring four runs in the ninth. Ryan Butzer (2-2) suffered the loss after allowing two runs, one earned on four hits and two walks.

Game 2 – Davenport 15, Rochester 0
The Panthers scored the run it only needed in the second. Zack Sardellitti drew a one-out walk in the second, moved into scoring position on Connor Seymour's sacrifice bunt and scored on Eric Cummings single to center.

Davenport cashed in two insurance runs in the fifth. Zylstra and Dennis led off the inning drawing walks and advanced into scoring position on Zac Wilson's sacrifice bunt. Bender's groundout to first allowed Zylstra to score and Greear's single to right center drove in the third run.

The Warriors battery made costly mistakes that helped the Panthers put 12 runs on the board in the sixth. Four different pitchers and their catcher tallied four wild pitches, two passed balls and four walks while Davenport recorded eight hits including a double by Bender and Dennis' three-run tour around the bases into left field.

Sessions tossed six shutout innings conceding four hits and a walk while striking out four.
