A Quick Look at Cornerstone
The Golden Eagles, who are in their second season as a baseball program, are coming off having split with Siena Heights last Friday. Cornerstone failed to hold on to a small lead as the Saints bounced back and ran away with game one 7-3. Game two was decided in the last inning on a walk-off RBI single by Nick Covello to give Cornerstone a 5-4 win. The second baseman Corvello is hitting .266 but has been the RBI man along with Travis Gordon. In addition to hitting the team's only home runs, both have driven in a dozen.
The Last Time vs. Cornerstone
Just like it has been this year, the winter last season had caused the Panthers and Golden Eagles to figure out how to get at least two games. After snow spoiled the Panthers plans to officially open the Farmers Athletic Complex against the Golden Eagles, the two school rivals met for the first time on a baseball diamond at Cornerstone's new park DeWitt Stadium. While the Panthers won game one 4-1 on
Drew Sain's complete-game gem performance, lightning in between the doubleheader cause game two be moved five days later. The Panthers used the bats to take game two 9-2.
A Quick Look at Madonna
The defending WHAC regular-season champion and tournament runner-up Crusaders have yet to begin league play due to poor weather conditions. Madonna was scheduled to open its conference season hosting Aquinas but the Crusaders' Ilitch Ballpark still has a frozen surface. The Crusaders last game was March 8, when they downed Trinity International 10-6 in the RussMatt Invitational in Florida. Freshman left fielder Thomas Daffern along with sophomore first baseman John Lauro and sophomore center fielder Ben Matigian all collected three hits. Freshman catcher Zach Tallman drove in three runs in the victory. Daffern leads the team in batting average (.409) and slugging percentage (.477) while Taylor Grezelakowski, who paces gets on-base the most with a .452 percentile, is the RBI man with a dozen.
The Last Time vs. Madonna
After weather forced their meetings to be postponed, Davneport and Madonna got at least the league requirement of two games in at Livonia.
Michael Allen had four hits, including a double, and Edward Grochowalski Jr. and
Jotham Woo both drove in three RBI but the Davenport baseball team couldn't recover from a large deficits in its doubleheader loss at Madonna Monday afternoon. The Crusaders rallied from three runs down to win game one 9-5 while they went to work right away to win game two 12-6.
