Next DU event: Wednesday, April 2 – at Aquinas – DH (Grand Rapids, Mich.) – 2 p.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Right-hander
Corey Sessions went the whole way to lead the Davenport baseball team to a 7-0 over Madonna in game one and
Derek Dennis hit an inside-the-park home run and added a walk-off RBI single to lift the Panthers to a 5-4 win over the Crusaders in game two on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Farmers Athletic Complex. With the two wins, the Panthers win the four-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series over the defending champions.
The Panthers (19-11, 7-2 WHAC) hit the road again Wednesday only to make a short drive to crosstown rival Aquinas Wednesday at 2 p.m.
Game 1 – Davenport 7, Madonna 0
Sessions (3-0) struck out five batters in all nine innings of work while allowing four hits and two walks. The only threat the Crusaders (14-10, 1-3 WHAC) had on Sessions was in the fifth, when left fielder Thomas Daffernreached reached as far as third base but was stranded.
Davenport's offense, meanwhile, scored the only run it needed in the first inning.
Cody Greear began the day with a double to left and advanced to third when
Derek Dennis laid down a bunt down the third base line. Although Zak Wilson popped out,
Brendan Bender followed with a groundout to first but it was enough to drive in the first run.
The Panthers did all the damage in the fourth inning. With one out, Davenport loaded the bases when Bender walked and Zylstra and Grochowalski hit back-to-back singles. The second run was forced in after starting pitcher Evan Piechota (2-3) hit catcher
Zack Sardellitti.
Eric Cummings followed with a single to left and
Connor Seymour hit into a fielder's choice to give the Panthers a 6-0 lead.
Game 2 – Davenport 5, Madonna 4
The Panthers had to play a game of chase in the early portion of the contest. Both teams scored a run in the first two innings.
After the Crusaders took a 3-2 lead in the sixth, the lead did not last long when Dennis hit a hard line drive over the shortstop and into the gap in left center. The left fielder suffered an injury while chasing for the ball that allowed Dennis to make a circle around the diamond for the second consecutive week. After the homer, Wilson's fly ball to right was dropped and it allowed him to reach third. He scored on Bender's sacrifice fly to give Davenport a 4-3.
Madonna would answer back in the seventh. Pinch hitter Shane Dokey single and reached second on Dennis' muffed throw. A sacrifice bunt moved him to third and Chase Holder's single to first allow the Crusaders to tie the game.
Pinch hitter
Ryan Manning drew a one-out walk, advanced to third on
Jordan Schumann's single to left and scored on Dennis' single to right field.
Blake Dahlstrom received a no decision despite allowing two runs on three hits and a pair of walks. He also struck out field.
Ryan Butzer helped Dahlstrom escape the threat in the fifth. Bender helped stop the bleeding in the seventh while
Jonathan Cheshire (1-0) got away with the Crusaders scoring the go-ahead run.
