Trip to Cornerstone and Home vs. UNOH Continues WHAC Play for Softball Team

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Davenport University was scheduled to play its final regular season games this week but due to the weather will have one more series next week. The nationally ranked Panthers head across town to face Cornerstone on Wednesday before hosting Northwestern Ohio on senior day Saturday. Davenport is currently in first place in the conference standings with three league doubleheaders to play.
 
Scouting Cornerstone (14-10, 6-4 WHAC)

Location: Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Golden Eagles come in on a hot streak as they have won their last four games overall and even got head coach Jim Farrel career win No. 300 this weekend in a win over Siena Heights. Farrel, who is in his 14th year as the head coach, has guided Cornerstone to a 14-10 overall record while they are 6-4 in WHAC games. The team is led by Heidi Walburg who is tops in almost every statistical category at the plate and in the circle. The senior is second on the team with a .397 batting average but is tops with eight homers and 23 RBI. In the circle, Walburg leads the way with eight wins and a 1.90 ERA while striking out 69 batters in 77.1 innings pitched. Cornerstone won all of their games this past weekend with sweeps of Siena Heights and Aquinas.

The Racers are in their first year of a varsity program and are under the guidance of head coach Tracy Coffman. The former NCAA DI player at University of Toledo has the Racers off to a 13-17 overall record while they are 1-11 in league play. UNOH picked up their first ever conference win this past weekend when they upset No. RV Madonna University to split the doubleheader. Kelly Merkle leads the Racers in batting average as she is batting .402 on the season while Camille Martin is tops with a pair of homeruns and 24 RBI. In the circle, the Racers have had a three-person rotation led by Erica Gulik who has a 3.56 ERA while she is 6-7 record wise. Chelsea Miller is just behind Gulik with 78.2 innings pitched and she leads the team in strikeouts with 69.
