GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – In a doubleheader that was supposed to be play at Cornerstone, the No. 22 ranked softball team posted a split on their home field on Wednesday afternoon. The 1-1 day drops the Panthers into a tie for first in the league standings with two dates remaining as they will host Northwestern Ohio on Saturday at 1 p.m. The team will celebrate senior day for Amber Getty and Debra Burton.

Game 1 – Cornerstone 3, Davenport 1

The "visiting" Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead after the first inning and it would be just enough runs to hold off a late threat from the Panthers as they posted the upset victory. Cornerstone struck on a 2-RBI double and then were led by the stellar pitching performance of Heidi Walburg who finished by allowing just three DU hits and one unearned run.

DU made things interesting in the fifth with their first run on a an error by the CU infield which scored Debra Burton and then the Golden Eagles got an insurance run in the sixth on a solo homerun for the eventual final score of 3-1.

Emily Maves took just her third loss of the season falling to 13-3.

Game 2 – Davenport 13, Cornerstone 1 (6)

The runs came early and often for the Panthers as they managed to post more hits and runs in the first six batters of the game than they did the entire first game. DU finished the inning with four hits and five running eventually forcing the CU starter out of the game before recording an out. The biggest damage was a 2-RBI single from Ashleigh Blovsky scoring KC Dunne and Karli Myers.

After CU scored one in the bottom half of the inning, it was all DU after that as they scored one in the fourth and then finished it off with seven in the top of the sixth including a 2-run homerun from Haley Obetts to put another mercy-rule victory on their schedule.

Alyssa Eastman finished the six innings in the circle and got the win to improve to 12-2 on the season. The freshman finished with six strikeouts while only allowing four hits and one earned run.

Davenport will celebrate senior day on Saturday when they welcome in Northwestern Ohio for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at the Farmers Athletic Complex.
