GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Cody Greear had three hits in game one and added another in the nightcap to tie the school record consecutive games with a hit at 15, and the Davenport baseball team did damage in the middle of both games to sweep a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference doubleheader over Siena Heights Thursday afternoon. The Panthers knocked in seven runs in the fifth during their 14-6 runaway game one victory and later brought in four in the fourth to take game two 6-1.
Greear, a junior transfer from Henry Ford CC, led off game one with a single to extend the hit streak to 14 and followed up with another base hit in the fourth of game two to tie Brandon Bongard's school record 15-game hit streak set from Feb. 17-March 11, 2012.
The Panthers and Saints will have a day off Friday but will meet again at the Farmers Athletic Complex to complete the four-game series Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be a busy day at the ballpark with the Panthers welcoming members of the West Michigan Miracle League and hosting Senior Day.
Game 1: Davenport 14, Siena Heights 6
Although Greear was caught stealing following his leadoff single in the first, he was picked up by the heart of the order. Derek Dennis drew a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. EJ Grochowalski followed with a pitch set to the left center field fence for an RBI double, and after Jordan Zylstra won a free pass to first, both runners moved into scoring position with a double steal and a single up the middle by Ryan Manning brought them home to give Davenport a 3-0 lead.
Corey Sessions looked solid during the first three innings with the help from an unbreakable defense, but the sophomore got into a jam in the fourth. The Saints (14-19, 4-10 WHAC) got two runners in scoring position with two out and a two-run triple cut the deficit to one. Sessions surrendered another base hit before turning it over to Jonathan Cheshire (3-0), who gave up two straight hits including a two-run double that gave the Saints a 5-3 lead.
Davenport quickly answered back in its half of the fourth. Zack Sardellitti smacked a fly ball to right field that hit the fence, just missing the home run by a few inches. Courtesy runner Hank Van Ooyen advanced to third on Zak Wilson's single and scored on Eric Cummings groundout. The Panthers caught a break with Wilson trying to score the tying run. Greear hit a ground ball to third baseman Austin Hauck, who's throw home was perfect but catcher Alec Duncan dropped the ball to allow Wilson to score the tying run.
The Panthers put the game out of the Saints reach the next inning using five consecutive hits including a two-run triple by Brendan Bender to take a 12-5 lead. Four different Panthers also knocked in at least one runner in to the seven-run inning.
Cheshire went on to allow one hit which was a double in the eighth but did strike out five.
Game 2: Davenport 6, Siena Heights 1
Davenport jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Dennis moved from first to third on Bender's single to center and scored on another hit by Jordan Zylstra.
Anthony Alarcon (2-4) was perfect in the first three innings of work but had a bit of trouble in the fourth inning that resulted in allowing the tying run across.
But the Panthers bats picked the left-hander with three consecutive singles by Grochowalski, Zylstra and Manning to score the go-ahead run. Eric Cummings followed with a squeeze bunt that turned into a fielding mistake by Saint starting pitcher Matt King (1-3), allowing the third baseman to reach base safely and bring home Zylstra. Nolan Wilson and Greear each drove in a run to build Davenport a 5-1 lead.
Alarcon went five innings striking out three and allowing three hits and a walk before turning it over to Ryan Butzer, who tossed two shutout innings the rest of the way.
