GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Although he singled in the fourth to break the school's all-time hitting streak record of 16 games, Cody Greear's double down the left field line broke the tie in 11 innings as the Davenport baseball team escaped with a 3-2 win over Siena Heights Saturday. After festivities of Senior Day and hosting members of the West Michigan Miracle League in between, Corey Murphy threw a one-hit, six-game shutout gem on the mound to help the Panthers take game two 8-0 and sweep the four-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series.
The Panthers (33-14, 20-5 WHAC) begins the final week of the regular season in non-conference play as they host Olivet for the conclusion of the home slate. It will be a single, 9-inning game under the lights Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Game 1: Davenport 3, Siena Heights 2
Davenport broke the ice in the third inning, but could only cash in one run on a sacrifice fly by senior EJ Grochowalski with the bases loaded. The Panthers got their second run the following inning when Ryan Manning led off with a double down the right field line and scored on Zac Wilson's single to left.
Senior Jordan Anderson allowed five hits, three walks and an unearned run in the fifth but a leadoff single in the seventh inning ended his day. Ryan Butzer (6-5) came from the bullpen and managed to get the first two batters he face to pop up in foul territory, but a double down the right field line enabled the tying run to score from first.
Brent Vaccaro (1-2) went from start to finish throwing 118 pitches. The Panthers threatened to walk away with win in the 10th when a bases loaded with one out forced the Saints (14-21, 4-12 WHAC) coaching staff to something very rare: bring all outfielders into the infield. The plan appeared to have worked as Manning grounded out for the second out and the outfielders retreated back to their respective positions and Vaccaro managed to get Zack Sardellitti to fly out to center to halt the winning run.
One inning later, senior Eric Cummings beat a chopper to third for a single and scored on Greear's double.
Game 2: Davenport 8, Siena Heights 0
The Panthers scored all the runs they needed to take game two the first chance they got with their bats. Cummings singled up the middle and advanced on Brendan Bender's fielder's choice. Both of them engaged a double steal and scored on Grochowalski's grounder and Jordan Zylstra's double to right.
Although there is no relation, it was all Wilson in the second inning. Zac Wilson led off with a double to right, advanced to third on Tyler Baratono's bunt and scored on Nolan Wilson's fly ball to right center.
Davenport put the game out of Siena Heights' reach in the fifth. Senior Jordan Schumann, who checked in for Greear in the fourth, led off with a walk and back-to-back doubles by Cummings and Bender set up an RBI double by Grochowalski and a two-run single to right center by Zac Wilson extended Davenport's lead to 7-0.
Murphy's (6-2) only hit he surrendered was in the second inning, a leadoff single. The sophomore would retire 15 of 16 batters for the remainder of the game.
