No. 23 Softball Concludes Regular Season Saturday at Concordia

Weekly Notes | WHAC Standings

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference regular season title is within reach for the No. 23 ranked Davenport Softball team as they head to Concordia University on Saturday for their regular season finale. DU needs at least one win to capture their third title in the last four years and a sweep would give them the title outright. It will be the last appearance for the team before heading to Ohio for the WHAC Tournament from April 30-May 2.

Third year head coach Greg Birerley has his Cardinals sitting in fourth place in the WHAC with one series to play against Davenport on Saturday. CUAA has traveled all across the country for its games as they have played just four home contests while their other 37 games have been on the road or at a neutral site. The Cardinals have been paced by two time WHAC Player of the Week Kortney Loar as the senior is hitting .344 on the year while driving in a team high 32 runs. She also is the team's top pitcher as she boasts a 2.17 ERA while striking out 122 batters.

Series History vs. the Cardinals
Davenport and Concordia have met 16 times prior to the 2014 season with the Panthers holding a 13-3 edge in the series. CUAA and DU have split their last two regular season series after the Panthers won nine in a row from the end of 2009 to the end of 2011.  The last five meetings have been low scoring affairs as the winning team has scored three runs or less which included a 1-0 win by DU in the semifinals of the WHAC Tournament in 2012. DU owns an 8-1 record in Ann Arbor.

What's Next?
The series with Concordia will end the 2014 regular season for Davenport and they will be in action next at the WHAC Tournament from April 30 - May 2 in Sylvania, Ohio. DU will open play on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and will follow with a game at 8:30, win or lose. The tournament continues on Thursday with the championship game (s) set for Friday. The winner of the tournament will get an automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament.

WHAC Tournament Moves Locations
For the first time since Davenport has been in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (2009), the conference tournament will not be held at Bailey Park in Battle Creek, MI. Lourdes University will play as the host from April 30-May 2 at Pacesetter Park in Sylvania, Ohio with the winner of the tournament receiving the conference's automatic berth to the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round.
