DEARBORN, Mich. – The Davenport Softball team is spending its weekend playing a pair of doubleheaders in Livonia and they got it started today with their third straight sweep to open conference play. The No. 23 ranked Lady Panthers posted two wins over host UM-Dearborn by the scores of 15-1 and 7-5 highlighted by 20 strikeouts from their three pitchers. The two victories lift DU to 20-4 on the season while they are 6-0 in league action and they will face #RV Madonna tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Davenport 15, UM-Dearborn 1 The first few innings were an abnormality for the Panthers as they put up only one run before finding their groove with three in the third to lead 4-0.
Those runs would be plenty of support for
Emily Maves who got her 10
th win of the season in the circle by going five innings while allowing just two hits and one earned run. The freshman picked up 10 strikeouts on the day which is the third time in her career she has 10+ k's.
The runs were piled on in the later stages of the game as every starter finished with at least one hit led by three from
Paige Sant'Angelo and two each from
Debra Burton.
Carli SanMillan and
Haley Obetts. Sant'Angelo posted a career high six RBI as the junior connected on two doubles.
Katie Creighton almost doubled her career RBI total as she knocked in a pair in Davenport's seven run seventh inning to bring the final to 15-1.
Game 2 – Davenport 7, UM-Dearborn 5 Alyssa Eastman improved to 8-1 on the season as the freshman went all seven innings while striking out a career high nine batters in the process. The win was solidified by her offense in the seventh inning when
Paige Sant'Angelo continued her outstanding day at the plate with a 2-RBI double scoring Eastman and
Mikayla Smith.
UM-Dearborn struck first with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the opening but then the Panthers rattled off five straight in the next four innings to take a 5-2 lead. DU got their scoring from a
Karli Myers 2-run homerun, a 2-RBI double from
Alyssa Eastman and an unearned run.
Looking like they would close out another sweep, the host Wolverines put up a three-spot in the bottom half of the inning on a 3-run homerun but all the runs were unearned via a DU error.
Then came Sant'Angelo's heroics in the top of the seventh as she picked up RBI number seven and eight and Eastman closed out Dearborn in the bottom half for the 7-5 win.
Post-Game Notes Davenport is now 19-4 all-time against the Wolverines and they have won 18 games in a row…The 15 runs in the opener marked the third straight game against UMD that DU has put up at least 14 runs as they outscored Dearborn 29-1 last season…
Alyssa Eastman has given up 5 runs in two games this year but of the 10 combined runs, 9 of them are unearned
