GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team put together another hitting explosion in the back end of its four-game Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference series against Indiana Tech Sunday afternoon. Four student-athletes combined for five doubles in Davenport's 12-4 game-one victory, and after scoring all their runs in the first five innings, the Panthers had to play defense the rest of the way and was able to hold off a reeling Indiana Tech 9-8 to complete the four-game sweep for the second consecutive year.
The Panthers, who has won five straight to improve their overall record to 24-12 overall and 12-3 in conference, will not only leave Grand Rapids but the state of Michigan for the first time since their spring break trip in Florida over a month ago as they travel to Lima, Ohio to face Northwestern Ohio. The top two teams in the league open their four-game set Saturday at 1 p.m.
Game 1 – Davenport 12, Indiana Tech 4
Davenport jumped into a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cody Greear led off with a single and used two passed balls and a groundout to score the first run of the game.
After only getting four days of rest, Corey Murphy was asked to go again for head coach Kevin Tidey. The sophomore conceded two hits and a walk in the first three innings but ran into trouble in the fourth. The Warriors (13-15-1, 5-5 WHAC) tallied back-to-back two-out singles followed by a double to score two runs and the lead. Murphy's day would end after walking the ninth hitter to load the bases.
Alex Schuiling took over allowed the third run across after a hit batsman but managed to get the dangerous Justin Kalusa to pop up for the second out.
Jonathan Cheshire (3-0) was able to escape the threat with a groundout.
The lead was very short for the Warriors as the Panthers knocked in five hits including two doubles to score four runs and take a 5-3 lead.
Davenport went on to score at least a run in each of the remaining innings. Cheshire would hold the Warriors hitless in 11 straight at-bats. The freshman would surrender one run on three hits and a walk in 5 1/3 innings of work.
Eric Cummings had three hits including two doubles, Derek Dennis, Jordan Zylstra and Cam Cooper also stretched a double in their outing.
Game 2 – Davenport 9, Indiana Tech 8
The Panthers went to work again when Warriors starter Reece Phillips (1-2) hit Brendan Bender and EJ Grochowalski back-to-back and was punished for it when Zylstra hit a RBI single to right center for the first run of the game.
Davenport wasn't quite done with Phillips as it added three more runs in the second. Leadoff man Cody Greear knocked in the second run with a single through the right side and Derek Dennis followed going the opposite direction for a two-run knock.
Despite the 4-0 lead, the warriors battled back against DU starter Blake Dahlstrom, who loaded the bases with one out before turning it over to Ryan Butzer (5-4). Butzer allowed two more runs across when he hit a batter and surrendered a sacrifice fly.
The Panthers regained the four-run lead in the third inning when pinch-hitter Ryan Manning drove in two on a single through the right side and Jordan Schuman added a two-out RBI single to left.
Although Indiana Tech went through defensive troubles, its offense helped keep the team alive. After scoring two runs in the fifth to cut the Panthers lead to 9-7, the Warriors made one last attempt to tie the game in the seventh.
Cheshire struck out the leadoff hitter but a walk and a defensive mistake kept the Warriors hopes alive. After loading the bases, the Warriors got two runs across with a groundout and a two-out rundown near second base.
