LIVONIA, Mich. – Davenport came away with a split on the road in their series with Madonna University on Sunday as the Panthers took game one 3-2 before falling 4-3 in extra innings in the nightcap. The loss is the first in league play for DU as they stand at 21-5 overall and 7-1 in the WHAC. Davenport will hit the road on Wednesday to face NCAA DI University of Detroit before returning to league action on Thursday at Concordia.

Game 1 – Davenport 3, Madonna 2

In a battle of the top two teams in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, the No. 23 ranked Panthers got another gem from freshman Emily Maves in the circle and a huge 3-run homerun from another newcomer in Alyssa Eastman to post the 3-2 victory.

Neither team threatened too much in the first three innings until Eastman came up in the top of the fourth and blasted a 3-run shot to put Davenport up 3-0. Maves continued to have her way against a strong Madonna offense and held the Crusaders without a hit until the fifth inning but kept them off the scoreboard even with a bases loaded jam in the sixth,

The host Crusaders finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh when Emma Cook took Maves deep for a 2-run shot but the freshman got the next batter to fly out to end the game. Emily finished with six strikeouts in the contest.

Game 2 – Madonna 4, Davenport 3 (8)

The host Crusaders came away with a split with a 4-3 extra inning win in the nightcap as they won on a walk-off homerun. The loss is the first for Davenport in league action and now puts the Panthers and Crusaders in a tie in the loss column with one each.

DU struck first in the opening frame when KC Dunne singled home Amber Getty but DU left two runners on base after they were on with nobody out.

DU added to its lead in the second when Haley Obetts singled home Karli Myers but MU came back with two of their own in the bottom to knot the score at 2-2. Then the Crusaders took the lead in the fifth and looked to have gotten the edge in game two but KC Dunne scored a run in the seventh on a single from Paige Sant'Angelo to send the game into extras.

The homerun by Erin Mayes in the bottom half ended the game as MU walked off with a 4-3 win. Alyss Eastman falls to 8-2 on the year with the setback.

Davenport will have two road doubleheaders this week at Detroit (Wednesday) and at Concordia on Thursday before coming home to host Aquinas on Saturday and Siena Heights on Sunday.

Post-Game Notes

The loss to Madonna in game two was the first to the Crusaders for Davenport in the regular season since the 2011 campaign…DU still leads the all-time series 15-11 with the split on Sunday
