NCAA DI and Three WHAC DH’s on Tap for No. 23 Softball

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 23 ranked Davenport Softball team will step out of conference play on Wednesday to face their first ever NCAA DI foe before returning to the WHAC slate for three more doubleheaders. DU will head to face the University of Detroit before taking on Concordia on Thursday in Ann Arbor and then host Aquinas and Siena Heights over the weekend. The DAN will have both home doubleheaders live with Scott Olsen on the call.
 
Scouting Detroit (3-24, 0-3 HL)

Detroit has not played a home game this season as its previous attempts have forced games to be cancelled or postponed due to weather and field conditions. The Titan offense is led by junior Kayla Kostich as she is hitting .309 with two home runs and 10 RBI, tied for the team lead. Senior Karyn McCarty is also tied for the team lead with 10 RBI and sophomore Christa McGahuey is hitting .261 with a team-high four homers and 10 RBI. Junior Kat Hoffman tops the team with a pair of wins in the circle and 26 strikeouts, while senior Julia Maksym has 14 punchouts.
 
Scouting Concordia (17-10, 0-0 WHAC)

Concordia will get back into action this week after having not played since March 28 in their spring break trip to Florida. Head coach Greg Brierley is in his third year at the helm and has the Cardinals at 17-10 overall despite falling in their last game to St. Catherine (Ky.). The Cardinals have been paced by two-time WHAC Pitcher of the Week Kortney Loar and a pair of WHAC Player's of the Week in Loar and Jessica Barjaktarovich. Loar is batting .337 on the season with a team high 24 RBI while Rachel Muscat is tops in batting average at .364. In the circle, Loar has a 1.42 ERA and is 7-3 overall while pitching 89.0 innings and striking out 87. Valerie Carrillo will need to be watched if she gets on base as she has 10 swipes in 14 attempts.
 
Scouting Aquinas (11-10, 3-3 WHAC)

Seventh year head coach Crystal Laska has the Saints just above the .500 mark as they enter the week with an overall record of 11-10 while they are 3-3 in league action after being swept by Madonna and splitting with UM-Dearborn last week. The Saints, who have appeared in the last two WHAC Tournament championship games, have been paced on offense by Kayla Foerster who is batting .513 which includes all 40 of her hits being singles. The Saints have hit only three homeruns on the season and are led in RBI by Torie Lowe with 17. In the circle, AQ turns to veteran Becca Shineldecker who is 6-3 overall with a 3.11 ERA. Caitlyn Hensel and Anna Kenny will also see work as they also have ERA's below 4.00.

The Saints are off to their best start in league play over the last six seasons as they are 6-2 under head coach Laura Klutsarits. Siena Heights swept UNOH, Lourdes and Indiana Tech last week after starting the season with a two-game sweep by Madonna. The Saints have a veteran lineup led by WHAC Player of the Week Taylor Hayes who is batting .415. Katie O'Hotzke leads the conference with nine homeruns and has 25 RBI to go along with the long ball power. Marian Boss (.391) and Megan Jones (.386) will also be ones to watch. On the mound, O'Hotzke has a pair of no-hitter so far this season and has pitched in 100 of SHU's 132 innings this year and has a 2.59 ERA.
