Next DU event: vs. Cornerstone – May 2, 2014 – 3 p.m.

SYLVANIA, Ohio – Davenport fell victim to a strong pitching performance in a 2-1 loss to Cornerstone in the opener but then the bats reloaded and picked up the pitchers to claim an 8-6 victory in the nightcap over Madonna to advance to the title game tomorrow afternoon. The Panthers, who are now 34-8 on the season, will face Cornerstone and will need to beat the Golden Eagles twice to win their second straight WHAC Tournament championship. The games will be broadcast live on the DAN.

Game 1 – Cornerstone 2, Davenport 1

In a pitcher's duel between Davenport's Emily Maves and Cornerstone's Heidi Walburg, it was a 2-run sixth inning for the Golden Eagles that was the difference as CU moves into the championship game on Friday at 3 p.m.

Neither team was able to muster any kind of offense in the first three innings but after CU threatened in the fourth, it was the Panthers who struck first in the bottom half of the inning. KC Dunne reached on an infield single and then stole second to get into scoring position. Two batters later the junior was brought in by freshman Alyssa Eastman to give Davenport a 1-0 lead.

That margin held up until the top of the sixth when CU brought across a pair of runs as they held a 2-1 lead after their at-bat. DU then proceeded to load the bases in the bottom half but stranded all three and went down 1-2-3 in their half of the seventh to come up one run short.

Game 2 – Davenport 8, Madonna 6

The Panthers used a late rally to come from behind and take down the Crusaders in the rubber-match between the two schools as they won 8-6. Emily Maves came on in relief for head coach McCall Salmon and picked up the win to improve to 17-4 on the season as the freshman went 4.1 innings while giving up three hits, one earned run and finished with three strikeouts.

Madonna, who had gotten into the loser's bracket finale with a dramatic walk-off homerun against Concordia, wasted little time in putting runs on the board as they brought home three in the top of the first to lead 3-0. The Panthers got one back in the bottom half when KC Dunne tripled home Amber Getty.

The Crusaders then proceeded to add a single run in each of the next two inning to take a commanding 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth where the Panther rally began.

The first three batters reached with Ashleigh Blovsky doubling and Alyssa Eastman and Paige Sant'Angelo each tripling to bring the margin down to 5-3. After a Debra Burton suicide squeeze scored Sant'Angelo, the Panthers tied it up on the program's first ever inside the park homerun from Carli SanMillan.

Madonna then regained the lead in the fifth only to see the Panther tie it up once more in the bottom half on a Sant'Angelo sac fly scoring KC Dunne. DU then took a 2-run lead in the bottom half of the sixth when they brought across a pair of runs on an RBI triple from Amber Getty and sac fly from Karli Myers.

Davenport will meet Cornerstone in the championship game on Friday at 3 p.m. DU will need two wins to claim the tournament championship in the double-elimination format.

Post-Game Notes
The four triples against Madonna tied a school record for a single game as DU also posted four against Concordia on April 1, 2011…The inside the park homerun was the first in school history and first HR for sophomore Carli SanMillan…DU improves to 16-11 all-time against Madonna and is now 17-8 all-time in the WHAC Tournament overall…Amber Getty and KC Dunne are now tied for the single season triples record with 6 (also tied with Dunne in 2013 and Haley Stehouwer in 2009)
