GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The No. 22 ranked Davenport Softball team got off to a fast start and then used a 2-run homerun by KC Dunne in the fifth to post a 4-2 win over No. 19 William Woods in the first game of the NAIA National Tournament Opening Round. The Panthers improve to 37-8 on the season and they advance to Tuesday's winner's bracket final where they will meet Olivet Nazarene at 11 a.m.

In a game that featured 167 minutes of rain/lightning delay, the Panthers of Davenport used a fast start and then held off a late William Woods rally to move on to Tuesday's winner's bracket final. Emily Maves got the win in the circle for DU as the freshman went all seven innings while allowing four hits, two earned runs while striking out three.

DU wasted little time in getting runs on the board as Amber Getty and Karli Myers each walked to lead off the game and Getty was then brought home on a single from KC Dunne. Myers eventually scored on the same play on an error by the left fielder.

That score held up until the top of the fourth when the Owls got on the  when Emily Murphy singled home Lindsey LeCuru to cut the lead in half.

KC Dunne then gave the Panthers some breathing room in the fifth when the junior launched a 2-run homerun over the center field fence that scored Amber Getty who reached on a double earlier in the inning.

William Woods made things interesting in the top of the seventh as they plated one run but Emily Maves got a foul out to end the game with two runners in scoring position.

Davenport will now play either Olivet Nazarene or Huntington on Tuesday at 11 a.m.
