GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On a wild and crazy day two of the NAIA Softball National Tournament Opening Round, No. 22 Davenport overcame a loss in the opener to No. 4 Olivet Nazarene to work their way into the championship game on Wednesday with a 16-15 win over No. 19 William Woods. The split leaves the Panthers with an overall record of 38-9 as they will play in their first Opening Round championship game in program history and will need two wins over the Tigers to advance to the NAIA Softball World Series.

Game 1 – Olivet Nazarene 15, Davenport 2 (5)

The No. 4 ranked Tigers proved their ranking in the day's opener as they overcame a slow start to score four runs in the third, three in the fourth and eight more in the fifth to mercy the Panthers after five innings.

Davenport's lone offense came in the fourth inning when Paige Sant'Angelo reached on an error, scoring KC Dunne and then Debra Burton connected on an RBI single, scoring, Katie Creighton.

Emily Maves took the loss in the circle as the freshman went 4.1 innings while allowing nine earned runs.

Game 2 – Davenport 16, William Woods 15 (8)

In the second highest scoring game in the program's six-year history, the Panthers overcame a late rally from the No. 19 ranked Owls to avoid elimination and move on to the championship game.

The two teams combined for 31 runs, 27 hits and the game was eventually won in the eighth inning on a two-run homerun from senior Amber Getty.

The Panthers grabbed an early 4-0 lead but it would only hold until the second when WWU tacked on three to their opening frame of two to lead 5-4. The lead change would be a sign of things to come as DU re-took the lead in the third and they would extend it to as many as 14-6 entering the sixth.

William Woods, facing a mercy rule loss if they did not score a run, picked up a 3-run homerun, which was the second of the game from Kacey Scharnhorst, to cut the lead to just 14-9. Entering the bottom of the seventh with a 5-run lead, it looked as if the Panthers would move on to the finals but five runs later, including a bases loaded walk to tie the game, sent it to extras tied 14-14.

Then with two-outs in the top of the eighth, senior Amber Getty connected on a two-run blast to deep right center field to give DU the lead and freshman Alyssa Eastman got the Owls to go down with only scoring one run in the bottom half to preserve the win.

Eastman had three hits and tied her season/career high with 5 RBI while KC Dunne and Debra Burton each had a pair of hits.

Davenport will need to win at 11 a.m. on Wednesday against Olivet Nazarene to force the "if necessary game" at 2 p.m. The winner of the Davenport Bracket will advance to the NAIA Softball World Series in Georgia.
