FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Cody Greear broke a pitcher's duel with a solo shot in the sixth and Jordan Anderson fired 6 1/3 shutout innings allowing one hit as the Davenport baseball team defeated host Indiana Tech 5-2 in a game of cat-and-mouse in day two of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers, who picked up their first 40th win in program history, needs one more win to clinch the school's inaugural conference tournament title.

Davenport (40-15) will wait to see if it will face the Warriors, Madonna or Aquinas Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Anderson improved to 5-0 after taking the Panthers into the seventh inning allowing three walks but striking out two. Despite helping Anderson escape a jam in the seventh, Ryan Butzer was charged with two runs in the eighth. Jonathan Cheshire went the rest of the way scattering a pair of hits for his first collegiate save.

Indiana Tech starter Brian Gremaux (3-3) held the Panthers bats early in the contest, with Derek Dennis reaching on base hitting a hard groundball off of the pitcher that ricocheted to the shortstop for the first hit. Much like what Brendan Bender did last night against Madonna, Greear took the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for the first run of the game.

After Derek Dennis reached second on a two-out throwing error by the third baseman, EJ Grochowalski punished the Warriors for the defensive miscue with an RBI single through the left side for the second run.

Despite having a strong performance on the mound, Anderson got caught in a jam in the seventh when he hit and walked two batters with one out. Butzer came in for the veteran left-hander and got out of the jam with a double-play ball to second baseman Jordan Zylstra to end the inning.

Another error proved to be costly for the Warriors. Zac Wilson drew a one-out walk and while he stole second, he moved his way to third on a throwing error by a wild throw from the catcher. Zack Sardellitti hit a groundball that hit the first bag and into the foul territory, which resulted an RBI double.

Butzer saw his day come to an end after walking the first two batters he faced in the inning. Jonathan Cheshire checked in and allowed the two runs to score on a pair of hits. He had to face a threat of two runners in scoring position, but the freshman got the second out with a pickoff throw at second and a rundown at the plate.

Dennis opened the Panthers half of the eighth with a ground rule double and advanced to third on Bender's single. Grochowalski and Jordan Zylstra both hit groundballs to first that was enough for Davenport to regain the three-run lead.
