Box Score GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport men's Division III hockey opened up at home on Friday night against previously unbeaten Central Michigan University. The Chippewas remained unblemished (5-0) but not without a fight from the Panthers in an 8-4 final at Patterson Ice Center. The Panthers started the first period with some fire. They were moving the puck well and had some good scoring opportunities. With four minutes remaining in the first, Davenport's
Zach Schwandt opened
up the scoring and gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead at the 4:29 mark. With a minute left in the first period, CMU got a quick one past DU goaltender
Andrew Habasevich for a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes.
Seconds into the second period,
Isaac Lippert gave Davenport the lead sneaking one past CMU goalie R.J. Nordstrom. Just like the first period, CMU came right back and tied it up with a nice shot over the blocker of Habasevich merely 13 seconds after the Davenport tally. The second period continued in the same pattern, with the Panthers scoring a goal and then CMU answering right back.
Hunter Ellens scored at 11:24 of the second from
Jordan Crawford to make it 3-2. Ryan Morse of the Chippewas tied it up at 3-3 coming at the 8:10 mark.
Josh Riemersma gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead heading into the second intermission.
The third period was a little bit different than the first two. In the third period the Panthers couldn't muscle enough strength to stop CMU's offense. CMU put up five consecutive goals in the third to conclude the game with a score of 8-4. Five different CMU players scored in the period as Nate Allgaier scored the game-winning goal at 13:49 of the third. CMU finished 0-for-4 on the power play while Davenport went 2-for-7. Habasevich had a busy evening with 47 saves. Davenport recorded 17 shots on goal as Nordstrom stopped 13 shots.
