Men's Soccer Hosts Purdue Calumet in NAIA Opening Round

DU is the No. 2 national seed

Panthers Host Purdue Calumet Saturday at 2 p.m.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 32-team field for the 2015 Men's Soccer National Tournament to begin on Saturday, Nov. 21 on campus sites. Davenport earned the No. 2 overall seed in the tournament with an overall record of 15-2-2 heading into the championships. The Panthers are trying to repeat as national champions and become the first repeat titlist since Lindsey Wilson did it in 2000-01. DU is making their fourth overall championship appearance, including their third straight, with a 4-2-1 record in the event. Davenport is also one of four teams in the field that has previously won a national championship (Bethel, Lindsey Wilson and Rio Grande).

"We are happy to be in the championship field and have worked hard to get back into this position," said head coach Chris Hughes. "The players are very excited to have this opportunity, some for the first time and for others another shot at the biggest prize. We have had some time off between matches and that has allowed us to heal and get ready for a tough tournament. Our experience is something that hopefully we can draw upon at big moments. I think that has to help at some level, but we also have to play at our highest level and see what happens. We wanted to structure our non-conference schedule with this in mind and that has prepared us."

The Panthers will host an opening round match this Saturday (Nov. 21) at 2 p.m. against Purdue Calumet (12-4-2) out of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Peregrines were runner-up in their conference regular season to earn their first trip to nationals. Purdue Calumet has scored 42 goals in 18 matches this season and has allowed just 19. They are led by Andres Ayala with 11 goals and 12 different players have scored this season. Miguel David has posted a 8-3-2 record in goal this season with 40 saves and a 0.96 goals-against average.

Davenport earned a berth into the tournament as regular season champions of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. They posted a 10-0-1 record during conference action. The Panthers scored 49 goals in 19 matches and allowed 21 this season. T.J. Ifaturoti has been their main weapon with 19 goals ranking ninth in NAIA. He also ranks second in the nation with seven game-winning goals to his credit. Jake Love is currently tied for the school's season assist record with 11 which ranks 17th in NAIA. He also has nine goals for a total of 29 points. Aaron Orban is 10-2-2 in goal for the Panthers with 53 saves and a 1.12 goals-against average.
