WHAC Title Defense Begins with Aquinas, Concordia This Week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Coming off an 5-0 start to the home schedule last week, the No. 13 Davenport baseball team continues the home stand will now begin the program's first ever Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference title defense this week. The Beltline Rivalry between Davenport and Aquinas takes to the baseball diamond Wednesday at 2 p.m. and Concordia will make a visit to the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.

A Quick Look at Aquinas
Under 14-year head coach Doug Greenslate, Aquinas is currently 3-6 overall and has lost five of the last six games. Most recently, the Saints are coming off an 11-7 loss to Grand Valley State, which is ranked 21st in the NCAA Division II, at Cornerstone Monday. Veteran Brendan Penny is one of three players to have not missed a game in the lineup on the young season, leading the team with a .405 batting average, five doubles and 10 RBI.
 
Davenport and Aquinas were originally scheduled to meet at Aquinas' Kimble Stadium but the Saints' ruled it not playable, thus moving over to the Panthers' home field.

A Quick Look at Concordia
The Cardinals are under new management with former player Zach Johnston, who jumped over to baseball after spending the last few seasons as an assistant coach for the softball program. Concordia is currently 5-13 on the year and are coming off a very busy weekend last week by going 3-5 in matchups against Indiana Wesleyan, Brescia and Calumet College of Saint Joseph. Evan Novak and Micah Oetting are the only two players on the Cardinal ballclub to have not missed a start this season. Novak currently leads all of Concordia, hitting .340 with three doubles and seven RBI.
