Box Score 2 The men's Division III hockey team wrapped up their regular season this weekend with a pair of defeats against Michigan State. The Panthers were 6-13 which was a vast improvement after not winning a game during the 2014-15 season. The Spartans and Panthers battled on Friday night at Kentwood Ice Arena in a 5-2 win for MSU. Luke Easton scored the first two goals for the Spartans and then Zach Beaumont scored short-handed in the second period for a 3-0 lead.
Jordan Crawford got Davenport on the board at 18:38 of the second from
Nick Scott. Dean LaMantia and Chris Coyne both scored third period power play goals for MSU to build a 5-1 lead. Scott added on his assist earlier with a goal at 18:17 of the third from
Hunter Ellens. MSU outshot DU, 43-24, as
Andrew Habasevich stopped 38 shots.
Saturday's contest proved to be a tighter one as MSU won 5-3 at Suburban Ice Arena in East Lansing.
Isaac Lippert scored 24 seconds into it unassisted for a quick 1-0 lead. The Spartans got the next two goals from Beaumont and Coyne as three total goals were scored in the first 2:36. Crawford tied the game at 2-2 at the 5:22 mark from Scott and the teams went into the first intermission deadlocked.
Zach Schwandt gave DU a 3-2 lead at 12:55 of the second and the Panthers kept that lead for just under five minutes as Beaumont's second of the game on the power play this time tied it up at 3-3. The back-breaker came early in the third as Coyne scored short-handed 51 seconds into the final period for the game-winning goal from Beaumont and Jack Iandoli. Tyler Bitterman added an insurance goal at 11:59. The Panthers were whistled for 11 penalties and MSU had 10 power play chances. DU went 0-for-2 on the power play.
