Panthers Sweep Rival Cornerstone

DU improved to 20-7 overall and 8-0 in the WHAC

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Davenport baseball team took a pair of games against rival Cornerstone on Wednesday to improve to 20-7 overall and 8-0 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference. The Panthers won 15-3 in seven innings due to a mercy rule in game one and then won 8-1 in a rain-shortened five-inning game in game two.

Travis Bolin had a monster game in game one going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and six RBI. He had his eighth home run of the season which was a no-doubter, three-run shot to left in the fourth inning in his third at-bat. He also had a pair of singles and his 10th double. Zack Sardellitti went 3-for-4 with his eighth double of the season and four RBI. Brian Sobieski drew three walks and scored three times in the leadoff spot. Cornerstone pitching walked eight batters in game one.

Corey Murphy went all seven innings and tossed 111 pitches improving to 5-0 this season. He allowed eight hits and two earned runs with one walk and 10 strikeouts. Clay Keltner took the loss for the Golden Eagles (1-2) lasting just 1.1 innings in his start. He gave up seven earned runs and walked five.

The Panthers took control of game two early with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Matt Priebe drove home a pair with a double down the left field line. Sardellitti and Bolin also had RBI singles in the inning. Priebe doubled home two more runs with another double down the left field line in the second inning. He finished 2-for-2 with a walk and four RBI.

Bryan Saucedo tossed five innings and allowed three hits and one run. He also walked four and struck out eight in 92 pitches. Collin Young (0-1) took the loss for Cornerstone giving up eight runs in three innings. Sobieski went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI in game two.
