Lakers earn weekend sweep over Davenport in DIII hockey action

The men's Division III hockey team squared off with nearby rival Grand Valley State University's ACHA Division III on Friday and Saturday this weekend. The Lakers provided too much scoring firepower and played solid defense against the Panthers in a pair of lopsided wins. Davenport has dropped five straight games and Grand Valley State has defeated the Panthers in eight straight meetings.
 
Game 1 (Friday, December 1st)
Final Score: Davenport 0, Grand Valley State 7
Location: Grand Rapids, Mich. (Patterson Ice Center)
Records: Davenport 2-9, GVSU 20-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Derek Simon had the lone goal in the first period for the Lakers at 7:09 unassisted.
-Grand Valley State scored four times in the second period to pull away. Spencer Godin, Brendan Ramboer, Ben Chafin and Alex Siroky all notched a goal in the middle period for GVSU. Godin and Ramboer scored 17 seconds apart to make it a three-goal cushion. Godin assisted on Ramboer's goal at 3:31.
-Siroky scored his second of the night at 14:17 of the third period from Ben Kowalske who assisted on Siroky's second period goal. Broderick Vanderlinde ended the scoring at 14:31 of the third from Ethan Doyle and Mitchell Lawton.
-The Panthers were whistled for three minor penalties and killed off each one of them. GVSU had four minor penalties and Billy Bonser had two of them. Bonser also had a 10-minute misconduct penalty at 12:07 of the third period.
-Conner McDowell made 44 saves for Davenport while Jack Lindsay stopped all 19 shots he faced for the shutout.

Final Score: Davenport 2, Grand Valley State 8
Location: Hudsonville, Mich. (Georgetown Ice Center)
Records: Davenport 2-10, GVSU 21-2

HOW IT HAPPENED
-The two teams played to a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes. Tyler Heyboer got DU on the board for the first time during the weekend with a power-play goal at 2:26 from Nick Fennessy and Travis Bouwkamp. Kowalske answered for Grand Valley State just 52 seconds later unassisted also on a power-play goal just seven seconds into the power play chance.
-The Lakers again flexed their muscle in the second period scoring all three goals. Reidar Burgeson scored short-handed at 2:51 from Simon and Ramboer and that goal built momentum for the Lakers. Burgeson scored again at 6:56 from Godin and Ramboer at even strength. Corey Smith made it 4-1 at the 13:59 mark of the period from Ricky Covault.
-Bouwkamp got DU's second goal of the game at 2:24 of the third period from Carter Janssen. GVSU's Burgeson finished his hat trick at 5:08 from Godin and Ramboer and then added a fourth goal at 13:21. Alexander Bjork and Vanderlinde also scored in the final period.
-The bad blood between the teams spilled over in the third period as Davenport's Shawn Marschall and Grand Valley State's Chuck Reed were disqualified for fighting. The game also featured 17 penalties.
 
UP NEXT
-Davenport will tangle with Central Michigan University on Friday and Saturday, December 8-9. The first game will be at Patterson Ice Center in Grand Rapids for a 5:30 puck drop on Friday. The teams will then skate in Mt. Pleasant at 9 p.m. on Saturday at Isabella County Events Arena.
